That was a tough day for Cowboys fans. That was Tom Freakin Landry. It took me a few years to warm up to Jimmy, but Jerry...still pretty frigid on him.
52-90 All Sports, Mostly Topps, Mostly HOF, and some assorted wax.
As a Cowboys fan, it was tough to see Landry go, but having followed the Hurricanes as well, I knew Dallas was getting the new blood in coaching they needed. Schram and the guys had become outdated in the new NFL. Unfortunately, Jimmy left and now sells Viagra or something, Jerry is still the owner and the team is about as organized as they were back in 1988. We're stuck with Jones, but maybe he will wake up and realize that he needs to let the smart people do their job, unfortunately Al Davis never learned that and I doubt Jerry will either

All credit to Jerry Jones - he did what Bum Bright didn't have the guts to do. Bright wanted to fire Landry but didn't want the stain on his legacy as owner. Jones took the PR hit and fired Landry himself. It was the absolute right decision and he hired the absolute right guy to replace him.
Saw an interview with Jerry the other day and he said firing Landry was a big mistake. That Bright offered to do it, so Jerry could have a clean slate, but Jerry declined and took the hit. At least that's how I thought I heard it...could be wrong. But he surely hired the right guy. Still wish he'd have hired Payton, post-Parcels.

They way he did was what he regretted. He said that he handled that situation the wrong way. Landry's son was on 1310 The Ticket here in Dallas on the anniversary and he said in the meeting that Jerry kept saying, "Jimmy's my guy, Jimmy's my guy." As opposed to - "Tom I'm relieving you of your duties as head coach of the Cowboys we would like to go in another direction."
Landry's kid also said they just got ahead of themselves. Days before the sale was final - before they even had the meeting with Laundry Jimmy was calling other teams trying to poach assistants and those teams were like, "Who are you?"
Now he's just punchline, a man with a massive ego who wants to have absolute control over everything and with talented guys who should be able to compete for a Super Bowl - Romo, Witten, Ware, etc they go 8-8 the past 3 years. Which I guess in itself is pretty remarkable that they managed that consistent level of mediocrity for that long. They've gotten themselves in cap hell and draft horribly. I don't see the trend going back up for the rest of the life.
