Introducing Myself (86 topps poppage)

Hello Members!

I have been reading many of your posts over the last year and certainly very entertaining. I collect mostly tiffanys, 80s stuff and vintage here and there. Being that I grew up as a kid in the 80s. A couple years ago I started up the hobby again when I bought a Rickey Henderson rookie card off ebay that I always wanted and never had as a kid. And of course it turned into buying cases, wax boxes, racks, sets you name it! I have been through a ripping frenzy ever since!

Anyways, I figured it was time to say hello since I've wanted to take part in several posts and noticing some members purchasing from me off Ebay was cool to!

Welcome, I have an itch to rip that is never satisfied as well.
  • Your earlier post finally pushed me in. I just ripped a 6 box 1986 rack case last night!

Hope it was fun, I'm looking forward to and simultaneously dreading 10 vending boxes. Did you pull anything gradeable?

Welcome to the boards Marc! I am an 80's kid myself with a focus on unopened boxes/cases from the 1970's to present. Sounds like our collections will have nice overlap. You will find lots of knowledgeable folks on this board.
  • I did pretty well. No Ryan, Rose, Mattinlgy, Ripken or Sandbergs in 10s though. But alot of potential for the others. Packaged up 75 to send to PSA. I am very careful inspecting cards from this set to send in since the grading is tough. Did get a lot of HOFers on the front of packs though.

Good Luck with the Vending rips. Busted a 86s once. Got a schmidt, Mattingly, gooden, and few others in 10s so its possible.

Welcome to the boards. Good luck on the 86 subs. I opened a 6 box rack case last year and subbed about 20 cards. Didn't hit any 10's, and I was pretty picky as well. The Ryan and Ripken I subbed that came back 9's, I still can't find any flaw in. Anyway, I hope you have better luck, and I'm sure it was a blast to rip. It was for me at least.

Did you buy the 6 box rack case off EBAY ? If so, maybe it was from me, as I sold one in January.
I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid.

  • Thanks 76!

I've actually had a lot of good luck with 86 subs. However, I've had some head scratchers on a few as well. Assuming its the grader I had. But never subbed so many at once before like the current sub going in.... so should be interesting.

    Hiya Marc!

    Welcome.

86T? Great set to rip. When those black borders are pristine - the set rocks!

Good luck on the sub you did. I'll be looking forward to your post on it.

86 Topps, one of my first baseball card memories...My brother and I traded these cards with one of his best friends---I remember some kinda swap meet at the house and we had a suitcase of 86s bundled together with rubber bands....Still appreciate the black borders and large team bubble letters

    Marc,

Welcome aboard. My collecting began in the 70's, but I was still going strong until 1986 so we have some overlap. 1986 was also the first year I began collecting unopen and you don't have to sell any unopened you may have to me either.

Looking forward to you future posts.

    Take care,

    Mike

Welcome. Marc. I started collecting around the same time as you did apparently. Are you just focused on baseball or do you collect other sports as well?

Originally I was going to send 75 but after this thread I narrowed it down to the ones I thought were best shot at 10s. Clearly I missed something.
Very interested to get these back and see the comparison between all those 9s and the phew 10s. Doesn't make sense. Maybe the grader?

There are very few people on this forum that can consistently distinguish between 9s and 10s. Personally if I were going for only 10s I would send my cards to EagleEyeKid for pre-grading (which I believe he may do for a per card fee). I believe EagleEyeKid posts the most consistently excellent subs of anyone on these boards.

I think you did very well on your submission. I have sent in around 120 cards from 1986 and did about as well as you did. Hard to tell between a PSA 9 vs. 10.
Looking for high grade rookie cards and unopened boxes/cases
  • welcome Topgun

i also love the 86 tops set - it was my first set as a coherent collector of 12 years of age -

i have a 6 box rack case waiting to be ripped - should i take away that i have a roughly 20/7200+ cards chance of any tens?!?!?!?!
  • Hey Marc,

I think I have bought stuff from you in the past. Good luck with the subs, I recently subbed 7 86 topps Ripken and got back 3-8's 3-9's and 1-10. So they are pretty difficult.

  • Not a bad job. Good job with the Tiffany's.
