Any luck busting 1986 Topps Baseball Vending?

I've got a bunch of boxes on the way and wanted to see what others experience has been. Looks like some decent value in 10s w/Rose #1 going for $130 range and a lot of low Pops going for $40 or so.

I busted three wax boxes last April and have about 1500 more that I have from when I bought a collection last spring. Of the stars that I thought were worth sending in, I only came up with about 20 cards. I'm sure if I scanned em for advise, that number would be in the low single digits. The chipping is so tough on the borders, and the centering isn't easy either.

I do really like that set though, I have a few more unopened boxes of 86 that I'll keep around. It's still a cheap product and a fun rip, I'm thinking about getting a few more boxes in the near future.

    The highlight 10's include:
Sandberg GM Pop: 3 (I've read on another post that a 10 could bring in a grand due to the extremely low pop, however a Tiffany 10 sold for $76 on 1/5/14 with 9 bids, so who knows)
    Ryan GM Pop: 41 ($350-$400)
Rose GM Pop: 40 (As said $130ish)
    Sutton GM Pop: 1 ($100)
    Henderson GM Pop: 19 ($75)
    Mattingly GM Pop: 71 ($75)
    Ripken GM Pop: 108 ($65)
    Schmidt GM Pop: 53 ($50)
    Clemens GM Pop: 61 ($50)

George Brett has a GM Pop of 19. I'd assume that he'd sell well too. Gwynn doesn't sell for too high surprisingly. $25 range.

There's a handful of other stars and All Star cards, and the Pete Rose commerative cards that do about $50 each as well. I should revisit those cards and maybe repull scan and get opinions. Again tough to get 10's but a fun rip either way. Good luck and post your scans when you rip through em!

Those are super condition-sensitive cards! Right now, there is still some value in ripping and subbing and getting a couple of 10s back.

But for how long? Seriously, how many collectors are out there trying to complete a 1986 Topps baseball set in PSA 10? It can't possibly be that many

Agreed. Looking at the registry, it appears there's only four people really going hard on the set. One guy with 100% with the next closest at 70%.

Thanks for the comments and I'll be sure to post the rips, though it will take a while to get through all 10 if I ever do. They were just way too cheap (under $5.50 per delivered) to pass up and I love having that many Rose's in the set.

It's one I'll definitely have to pay close attention to the registry/pop report to decide what to grade, but I can probably sell non-10 caliber stars raw and a complete set or two and recoup how little I have invested

    I've never busted vending.

Bought a 6 box rack case many years ago and opened 1 box. Got quite a few 10's and many 9's that looked like 10's.
    Too bad 9's are worthless.
I guess I should open another box soon.

Let us know how it goes.

This is the problem with mid 80's cards, for the most part.

Any idea what this is on the Pop Report?:

    Nolan Ryan-100/JIM CLANCY-412

    A wrong front/back combo possibly?

I opened up 2 vending cases and they are very difficult to hit on PSA 10. My Sandbergs were horrible and my Nolan Ryans were gorgeous but never got a single PSA 10 from the 14 that I submitted. Out of the 2 cases -I figured there was 2000-2500 cards that were PSA 9/10 candidates. In the 110 cards that I submitted I hit 34 PSA 10's and 21 PSA 8's. Most of the PSA 8's were Sandberg and Ryan's hoping for a PSA 10, but my point is that I careful inspected the very best cards to submit. If the card was not centered 55/45 or better it never made the cut.
From my case break I have figured 10% of the vending box is gradeable(true mint condition).

I busted several vending boxes of this quite a few years ago. I was in search of a decent Sandberg and the two I did sub came back 8's. I didn't have much luck with any of the boxes, 86 is just a very tough year for high grades.

Yeah, for a Rose collector like you, '86 is great!

I collected Rose as a kid (who didn't in 1984-1986) and 1986 was such an awesome year for opening packs. Seemed like you got a Rose every few packs.

Oh, I busted a vending case sometime back (of 86) -- I got about 8-10 boxes in and picked my 2 'best' cards out to send in for grading with another submission. 8.5 and 9. Then again, I'm convinced I got the GoD on that sub.
  • I am 2/2 on PSA 10s from rack. I have about 50-60 more sleeved commons that should grade 10 out of racks. Have not submitted as of yet. My test run did well....2/2 on 10s and 18/20 for 1979-1986s. The other 2 came back 9s.
