set registry proof legend obverse seated dimes question

looking at the PCGS set registry yesterday i noticed under the
proof seated dimes legend obverse registry set page, PCGS has written a paragraph about the above dimes and including is a mention of how the 1862 is the rarest proof seated dime in this set.

any comments about the 1862 and why it is so rare in high grades??

would this effect the price of an original superb album rim toned cameo gem proof pcgs 1862 dime?

sincerely michael

    Michael,

I saw your post earlier, but have no real knowledge of the series specifically. My guess would be that the coin has the third lowest mintage for the Type, and that has a major effect on the scarcity.

Michael: I was under the impression that the civil war had something to do with it. The US Mint in Philly was in a state of chaos as silver was being hoarded like crazy and mintages were on the way to a steep decline as far as reguklar and proof issues were concerned. The mintages kept dropping on proofs until 1863 and regular issues until 1867.

For some reason, I suspect that some of the silver proofs of 1862 and 1863 were melted since silver was worth more than the value of the coin itself.

    Mostly speculation on my part.

  • IMHO there were 2 reasons for the Civil War coin scarcity.
1). The Confederacy was buying munitions from France that were paid for in Gold and Silver.
2). At the end of the Civil War the silver exchange rate grew out of balance with the price of gold causing a huge silver melt and conversion of silver coinage into gold.
It stands to reason that the smaller mintage silver coins disappeared at a relatively faster rate. In fact the only Civil War era dimes that still can be found in any quantity are the 1861-P & 1862-P (because of their relatively large mintage). I have a 1862-P PCGS-MS63, dime that is the only Civil War dime that I have seen for sale recently outside of major auctions.

wow that is a very rare very good coin the 1863 s!! oh and who is mr.seateddime?? and how do i contact him? waht is his e mail address? any help would be kindly appreciated

    sincerely michael

the 63 s is a rare coin it is usually available to about low end xf a real au lusterous coin would be an extremely difficult task to find and most top ranked collection of seated dimes rarely have a mintstate example

the 1885 s is to me the rarest s mint seated dime in circulated grades to find a circ piece is extrmemly difficult and up to fine grade are often all weakly struck on the reverse!! rare in mintstate
