'73 Topps Poppage -- meh.

From a nice raw near set I picked up off of ebay. They killed the stars which I had pegged as 8's. At least Gossage got through. The N6's were killer too as they were among the best....

Once again, 50+ cards without a .5

    <<Once again, 50+ cards without a .5>>

This continues to confuse me. I would love to hear an explanation for this. Originally, I thought that the upper "half" of cards within a certain grade would get the half point bump. Clearly that's not true, although I'm not sure why. So is there a "target" percentage? The top 10% get a 1/2 grade bump? If I counted correctly, you had 22 PSA 8's. Am I to believe that none of those 22 was superior to the others? You had 15 or so 9's, so those don't count, but the remaining 40 cards, none of them were .5 worthy? It seems some graders just don't use the .5 grade.
  • Seems like a pretty outstanding sub to me. Not many 7's and only a few 6's on star cards. Pretty high percentage of 9's. On the N6's you are not charged, and you didn't get any evidence of trimming. With the Gossage Rookie 9 you pretty much paid for your submission.

Great sub, Mike! Congrats on the Goose, and sorry to see they beat up on the star cards. I'd be interested to see scans of the star cards along side a few of the commons that pulled 9s.

Nice number of Mint 9s, a tough grade for 73s with those black backs. Sherman #660 in PSA 9 is nice, too, last card in the set.

Thanks men -- not a complete wipeout, but 17 cards below 8 is definitely not what I was expecting. I am happy with the 9's (obviously) and the Goose saved the sub.

I'll throw up some scans when they arrive.

I can't figure it out either, George. I guess they will probably get a return trip to Newport Beach. I am super bummed about the Bench -- I've never had a nicer one.

  • The cards in PSA 6 look nice, probably better than 6's except for the Era Leaders. I would crack and send to SGC along with the N6 cards you have. SGC 88 and PSA 8's on those cards don't sell at a huge difference. When you're talking PSA 9's vs SGC 96 there might be a bigger difference.

Do you think the Bench would have gotten an 8 (OC) otherwise?

The Clemente looks beautiful! Don't know why its a 6. The 8 on the Jackson is killer and you gotta love the 9's. No matter who the player.

Mike you know as well as I do you just never know sometimes. But I think you still did well overall. Mike are you doing a graded set?

Nice job on the 73's .Next to the 75 topps they are hardest to grade as the quality control on the 73s are as bad as the 75s except the 73s have the white easier to maintain borders.

My bet is they go from 6s to 8s and 9s after their next trip...unless there are surface wrinkles or something we can't see in the scans.

Tough grades on most. Bench....I have no idea. Rose....I have no idea. Clemente has a stain on the upper right border. Crack out a few.
