Pricing for PR70DCAM American Silver Eagle

I have a friend that is wanting to sell a 1998 P PCGS PR70DCAM American Silver Eagle and needs to know a price range. Good coin for a registry set. Would appreciate anyone sharing their knowledge on the current value if they know. One I inform him of the price, I will be glad to steer any interested parties his way.

Thanks, Dennis

Hmmmm. I know it's an expensive coin. I just don't know how expensive.image

  • I'll start it with $1000.00 . Looking at the Registry there are the following Proof70's

    1987 - 1
    1990 - 1
    1991 - 1
    1992 - 1
    1994 - 3
    1999W - 1
    1997 - 1
    1998 - 2

This is one of those threads I have to add my "cents".I believe like most modern coins in PR70 or MS70 you have to look at the potential for more of them being given that grade, when determineing value. While at present the population is "low",it could rise.I do believe the population will stay less than (25) when all is said and done though. Now to answer your question,I wouldn't pay more than $500 for it myself. There are others that might spend more to get it into their possesion.

I have never seen one up close that has been graded by PCGS and would love to have one in my hands to compare it with the 70's I own in NGC slabs. Having said that, I would sell it now and my guess is it will bring over $1000. I would sell it now, because I think you will see more PCGS 70's. It is hard for me to imagine that economic pressures won't eventually loosen their standard. I am guessing that this conversation has been bandied around at PCGS. Just a thought.image

Actually the current trend has been towards less PR70s -- as far as economics of the situation, PCGS also has to consider the possibility and often substantial cost of having to downgrade a PR70 in the future. It's hard to argue that something belongs in a PR70 grade with visible flaws. And proofs show flaws more readily than MS coins. PCGS is still cranking out some MS70s, perhaps they feel those are "safer".

The other way to go -- and perhaps what they should do -- is put more coins in 70 holders, driving the population up and prices down to more sane levels. But that might hurt their perception of being strict.

In any case -- no prediction of future value implied. PCGS PR70 prices have more to do with PCGS policy and collector whims than the coins themselves. And I don't pretend to understand either of those factors. image

Yes, but the current trend in their stock is not good. This is a business, one way to increase it might be to fall in line with the other grading companies. Who would submit a proof ASE to them, given their perceptions on them?

Actually I bet if you contacted some of the SAE proof registry set owners they would pay you a pretty penny for it.image

Try contacting this guy. He would probably buy it. He's also a member of this board. Send him an email asking if he would like to buy one.
