Nice strong "4" and Mexico City mintmark. Lots of strong elements on the upper left areas of the shield. Why do the cracks form? Was this a shipwreck coin?

The cracks are just from how the coin was made. They essentially cut a hunk of gold off of a bar, adjusted it to correct weight, and then struck it as it was. There was no collar involved nor was there any uniformity to flan shape, so the metal flowed to the path of least resistance, often times splitting in the process. If you smashed a hunk of clay between your hands, you'd likely see the same effect at the edges.
