Snow Day Rip: 1977 OPC wax, 1980 Topps wax and 1975 OPC wax! 1975 mini wax pack or 1978 Topps rack?

With the snow and sleet hammering Long Island, I took the day off from work and decided to while away the day digging into some unopened product. Will post scans later this afternoon!

For those of us stuck at work, a good pack rip will make the afternoon more interesting!!! Good luck!!

What, it was just a little flurry this morning. Must be nice to have a cushy job. image

Btw, may I suggest ripping some 1975 mini's instead of the 1980 Topps wax. The 1977 OPC wax and 1981 Topps vending are also acceptable ripping material. image

Are you hitting the 3rd box of Gaspipe's 81 Vending? I'm still sitting on all 3 of mine, but your success on those is NOT making it easy.

OK, first for single packs...77 OPC up first. Not a bad pack, and 8 cards in 77 OPC as opposed to 10 for Topps. I love the Minoso card, LOL...Morgan is OC, but Griffey looks decent. Centering on these 70s OPC packs is brutal! But I love the rough cut--the way authentic 70s OPC cards SHOULD look!

This would be the third, Jim, but the thought of plowing through 500 cards is a bit overwhelming, so I'm going to bench the 81 box in favor of a 75 OPC wax pack!

The Morgan presents pretty well Tim. Wise move on the 1981 Topps vending box, save that for the weekend. image

No noteworthy pulls in either the 1980 Topps or 1975 OPC wax packs. The 75 OPC pack was a blast to open even if the centering was horrific throughout, lol..this Driessen is not too bad. I may have to rummage through some more raw packs to satify the HOF hit craving, lol..I do have 3 more raw 75 OPC packs but those have intact pieces of gum and no tears, at least one of which I need to be apparent before ripping it, LOL..

I heard if the pack slips out of your hand, there is a possiblity of gum breakage. image

Don't give me any ideas, LOL!

I also have a PSA 7 75 mini wax pack from the same box that Bosox pulled 4 9s from so I may get out the bolt cutters and bust that one. If it were a GAI slab, it'd be opened already.. image

A couple more 75 OPC cards from same pack...the color and registration on the cards in this pack was terrific...if only centering were a bit better!

Yeah, those GAI holders are great for busting out packs and I like those holders better especially for wax. I say bust that baby open. I'll send Eric over to help you.

OK, I've decided to rip both...I'm going to start with the undercard~the 78 rack, and then finish with the 75 mini pack.

    Good catch, Eric!

I've noticed that Shea Stadium served as the backdrop for many Topps cards from the 70s. I'm assuming it was due to Sy Berger being from NY.

OK, first section of 78 rack (E & F sheet cards). Off to a promising start. Some decent cards, 7 worth scanning out of 13. On to the next cell! image

Grab a corner with channel locks and hold the pack inside a garbage can, snap that whole corner right off - so that the shrapnel all flies within the garbage can. Chunk off a little more if need be, then insert a flathead screwdriver parallel to the top and pop that rascal open. Same as a slab. 30 seconds - start to finish. Yee-Haw (if I may quote Neil).

OK, next up, middle cell! Some nice cards again~4 worth card savering including a really sdharp '77 Victory Leaders card which at first blush appears gem mint to me.

Last (header) cell is up next~this is where many of the money cards are packaged, including Murray, Brett, Yount, Schmidt, Rose, etc!

Regular PSA card slabs take 15 seconds. Never had a mishap. **knocking wood**

edit: the key is really sliding in that screwdriver -- should almost reach the other side, or else you just pop off a little piece instead of prying the slab apart. Keep it parallel to the top off the slab --- never towards the card!!! This method even works for BGS.

Some nice HOF power in the header section! The Brett is beautifully centered and sharp! A Mint 9 on that card will pay for the rack and then some. Winfield looks good, too. Both these cards are fairly tough, as far as I recall. 4 cards total worth scanning (also pulled a pretty nice Tony Perez), but the Brett is the make or break card!
