    HOF 2020...

I went to Cooperstown in 2007 when Ripken and Gwynn were inducted, and it was the largest crowd in the history of the induction ceremonies at an estimated 75,000 people. It took some people over 8 hours to get out of the traffic jam leaving that day. However, it took me less than an hour because I parked 5 miles away and rode a bike to the ceremony. I bet there will be well over 100k there in 2020. With Jeter's popularity and the proximity to NYC, it will be insane there.

I've always hated Jeter, but the guy deserves all the accolades he'll receive.

I agree Jeff, the crowds will be insane. He was a player I loved to hate, but I've always respected the way he approached the game. The Yankees will struggle to find someone to fill his void. He is/was more than just their SS.
    I collect Cal Ripken cards, T206, E95, E210, R319.

The guy is a stud on and off the field.

What a list of chicks he has been with.
  • If all his fans and all his ladies all show up, it will be a record crowd for sure. I imagine his going away farewell tour will make Rivera's look like child's play.

Derek Jeter has always handled everything both on the field and off with perfection. A 100% classy guy and great person as well as athlete. Which makes it no surprise that his farewell letter to the fans and baseball world is so well written, eloquent, and thoughtful.

One of the few players that fans of every team can agree on liking something about. Whether it's his on field skills, the way he presents himself off the field or the overall way he plays the game. His retirement will hit young baseball fans hard. I would consider him this generations Mickey Mantle when it comes to popularity.

As others have mentioned Jeter's ex gf list itself is HOF worthy.

Makes you wonder why such a nice guy never settled down.
I recall him giving Matsui a hard time about marriage and its affects on performance.

Maybe he is indeed a genius both on and off the field.

Definitely a great player and deserving of a first ballot HOF vote.

However I admire a man who marries the woman he loves, stays with her through thick and thin, and puts his family ahead of himself much more than a guy with a long list of hot girl friends.

Agreed. Look what marriage did to Tiger Woods. Jeter was smart to stay single if he wasn't willing to fully commit to someone. It will be interesting to see how much his card values will increase.

I believe Jeter has already established his worth in the hobby.
therefore I don't think you'll see any fluctuation in his top cards.

It honestly could be another 20 years before we see another Yankee great established.
look at 70's through 80's, no Yankee from those eras are put in the same light as Gehrig Ruth Mantle now Jeter.

BLASPHEMY! lol ... I know he is one of the best to play the game and should be a HOF'er the first ballot.

Like it was said before ... if he were married and had a long list of G/F, that's a different story. But the guy chose to stay single, so why knock him for that?

I'll go out on a limb and say he's been a better ambassador to MLB than Mantle.

He may be taking the George Brett approach. Wait until you're near or at retirement before settling down and getting married.

Don't know if it was planned this way or fate, but it could'nt have worked out better for his retirement plans for this year. He will have the retirement tour spotlight all to himself what with Posada/Rivera having already completed theirs. Wonder if the injury bug will rear it's ugly head sometime during the year, if he will complete the season. Or if he bats around 200-225 would he be benched? This may put extra pressure on Giradi as he will have to juggle playing him for the fans or dealing with the need to win games, especially if a tight pennant race comes into play. Will the respect he has earned play into his amount of playing time regardless of any declining abilities? The balancing act will be of interest to observe.

I wouldnt want Girardi's job this coming season, there are so many variables in the lineup with Texeira, Soriano, Ichiro and maybe Jeter?

Absolutely no way Girardi benched Jeter this year, regardless of performance

We all know why Jeter can't wait for the season to end: so he can get back to his first love.

I am not a Yankees fan, but I do have great respect for both Jeter and Mariano (even though they beat up my Braves in the late 90's). Like Mantle I believe he will be one of the players that the younger generations will recognize as one of the game's true great players.

  • Or maybe he's taking the george clooney approach...marriage and years with the same woman not for him. Instead a never ending line of celebrities, models etc. Variety is the spice of life a teacher once told me. To each his own

Oh joy, another whole year of overstaged Yankee drama. I guess they didn't get enough mileage out of the Rivera going away tour, so now we have to suffer the same fate with Jeter.

He's a throwback from another era. Love or hate the Yankees, Jeter is the man.

Maybe Jeter knew all along he wasn't the marrying/settling down type and figured it'd lead to trouble if he were to try. Perhaps if Tiger Woods had that figured out from the start...
