Difference between flips for PSA/DNA CERTIFIED

Ive seen 5 different types of PSA/DNA flips 4 blue and 1 red.

1- Blue flip PSA/DNA cert. auto grade only and then the numerical grade of the auto. but not the card itself
2- Blue flip PSA/DNA cert. authentic auto with no numerical grade for the auto or the card itself
3- Blue flip PSA/DNA cert. reprint with authentic auto.
4- Red flip PSA/DNA cert. authentic and nothing else
5-Blue flip PSA/DNA cert. autentic auto and card grade?

My questions are all of these cards authentic/original as well (case #3 isnt obv because its a known reprint) or is the autograph all they care about or do authenticate the card as an original and then the autograph? Also what is the difference between case #2 and case #4 besides the color of the flip?

As a newbie I've been confused by this too. For instance, my paperwork says $25 for PSA/DNA authentication and I have the choice of "grade or no grade." Is that a grade for the auto or the card? If it's for the auto, how do I get the auto authenticated and the card graded, and how much is it?

Blue flip - Auto grade ONLY. They make no claim on the card. It could be reprint, it could be trimmed, etc.
Red flip - Grade for card ONLY. They are certifying the card and the autograph.

So if I want a red flip, where is that on my submission form? Is it the $25 one, the $17 one, or something else?
  • The psa/dna red flip doesn't have a grade just says authentic. Isn't case #1 mean the card has be authenticated as an original first? Why do they have a seperate blue flip that says psa/dna reprint with just the auto certified?
  • is there an option that grades both sig and card ?

No, case #1 is simply implying that the autograph is authentic, not the card. This has (obviously) caused some confusion, so PSA/DNA now designates all reprints as "reprint".

For red flips, most are just labeled as "authentic" but if you look on ebay there will be several with numeric grades.

If you are looking at a PSA/DNA form, you are filling out a blue flip submission. You can have the autograph (not the card) graded or not.

If you would like a red flip, you need to fill out a PSA card submission form. There will be a location on the form for autographed cards.

On a separate note, I never submit cards for authentication when there is not a special going on. Sometime on the forum there are "Group Subs" at around $10 a pop and if you check the PSA card specials for the month you can usually find a special that applies to autographed cards.

That would depend on the card.

Okay, well it depends on the Mantle.

A good rule of thumb is that if the card is worth more than the autograph, go for the red flip. If the autograph is worth more than the card, go with a blue flip.

If it's a 1980's Donruss Legends card, go blue flip. If it's a NM 1960's Mantle go with the red flip.

That is not the case. You can request a grade or just "authentic". See two of my cards from my '52 set below:

I always look at the card that the auto is on. If the card itself is valuable (and that is very subjective) I would want the card in a RED FLIP. That way, if you decide to sell, the buyer does not have to worry about the card being a fake and SHOULD bring a higher sales price.

Yes. Did you get my reply to your reply? image

  • If you want the card graded you cannot use the PSA/DNA special as this will only be for the autograph. You will want to fill out a PSA card form and select the service that says “Autographed card grading” $25 and then check the box that says “with grade”. This service will authenticate both the card and autograph, grade the card, and encapsulate the card.

Always go Red Flip and get the card graded especially if it's a high graded card.

People don't care much about the autograph grade just that it's real. An 8 graded auto and a 10 auto have about the same value on a similar card maybe 10-15% difference higher whereas an 8 graded card and a 10 card are vastly different in value maybe a 1000% difference.
