Just like how it's easy to figure that athletes get paid millions every year just to show up and play a game...without realizing all the behind the scenes stuff (to say nothing of the many years of practice and probably some good ol' fashioned talent and luck and the fact that only roughly 1% of those athletes will make the big leagues) that goes with it and makes it possible.
And wasn't there a mid 90s insert set that features Randy's photography? Guess it gives "Mr. Snappy" a whole new meaning!
Not a bad hobby. Doesn't compete with Glenn Hubbard being a snake charmer, but a good hobby nonetheless.

You know taking a pic of willie mays catching a ball from the side line involved you doing nothing but capturing it. You did not set the lighting up, the motion , the act. You were there on the side line . Even an amateur with a two dollar camera can capture an amazing picture. You just have to take enough pics.
The skill in photography is not the capturing but the observation, you need to have a keep eye . Unless of course you are talking about staged photography like fashion or portraits
But really the best photographers in the world always claim they do nothing but capture a moment that is already there. What makes them great is their ability to pic a situation that would make a great photograph , the right lighting the right angel , etc.

I have an RV account. I don't just shoot the picture, I work with the client to come up with the concept, then I location scout, arrange for vehicles, cast models, book hair and makeup and wardrobe stylists. I book assistants, arrange for equipment, pull permits, often from multiple government agencies, deal with insurance, hotels, flights for cast and crew, and then the shoot begins. All of those people have to be coordinated in order for me to "just push the button at the right time". Not to mention I have know how to be in the right place for where the sun will be- and have a contingency plan if there is no sun that day, since all of those people and permits are going good for one set time. Once the shoot is over I have to make sure the images are delivered to the client and the retoucher, and supervise the retoucher to make sure he doesn't go too heavy handed and lose the vision of the image I've got several fashion accounts, as well as brokerage houses, kids toys, and cosmetics. All similar levels of production, and the above is just the tip of the iceberg. When someone asks how long it took to take a picture I tell them 1/500th of a second and 52 years. There is a lot that goes into every shot.
Journalism, fine art, reportage, all generally require less production but still require an enormous amount of skill and commitment. Being a photographer is the greatest job in the world, and it's certainly competitive. hey man I have seen instagram and everyone does do it ! lol I think a person with no training at all could capture a beautiful photograph but I do not think you could replicate that with an person never trained to paint creating a masterpiece. Or picking up a chisel and pounding out the David statue. I mean if Randy Johnson can do it lol

Wow, I've seen a bunch of documentaries on famous sports photos and sports photographers and none of them said I just pressed the button. It is facinating at least to me to hear the stories of how famous sports photos came to be. Photographers have to know their equipment, the how to anticipate the action, the lighting and angles, the composition....it is amazing to me. I've read essays on photographing the Kentucky Derby - it takes days to set up all the still cameras for a two minute race. There is always a matter of luck, but David Tyree catching a football on his helmet took of years of training to make that lucky play.
Maybe I'm in the minortity because I actually have some favorite sports photographers, guys like Hy Peskin and Neil Leifer. Even Instagram was mentioned, check out the photos by Brad Mangin - he did a whole season of Instagram baseball photos that are just amazing. Let's face it, we know bad photography, lots of baseball cards have bad photos.
lol so now if I use a tape recorder to record music I'm a musician ? You are taking a picture of something already there. It is a device recording something, an image ,a capturing of light.
Yes, you can stand in a room where the sound is the clearest and deepest with your tape recorder, that is not art , neither is photography. Just because you got a good spot where the light comes in best for your device to record it , does not make you an artist.
Anyone who claims its art is only kidding themselves.
tomorrow I am going to use the Xerox machine to copy some paintings and I will be a great painter too. lol . I will make sure the print quality is the best, set up the scanner and printer at the finest settings. Might take me a few hours.

I'll reply against my better judgment. A good photog needs to know how to work with composition elements, light source and shadows, depth of field, balance, how to capture movement, perspective, background, handling the subject matter, lines and curves, post-processing, correct aperture and shutter speed, cropping, selective focus, ISO and film speed, white balance. Other than that, you're right it's just luck
The question is - which former MLB player Randy Johnson are we talking about? I believe that in the "Being Randy Johnson" bylaws there is a mustache clause.

I guess I can appreciate your tenacity for offering a good debate, but your perception of "art" is very limiting and entirely inaccurate. Who are you to define what "art" is and isn't? Art is not defined by the difficulty involved in creating it, or the time it took to make it, or even whether anyone other than the creator actually enjoys it. Your perception of photography is also narrow-minded and shows you don't know much about good, artistic photography. We're not talking about the pictures you post to your Facebook page, we're talking about art captured on film... and if you can't see these photos as "art" now, maybe some day you will.
I would say that yes, an average person may be fortunate enough to capture a great scene, if by happenstance, and take a great photo, but a skilled (or gifted) photographer is someone who can capture powerful images on a consistent basis and who understands the concept of composition and all the technical aspects that go into professional photography and a photo shoot.

well first we already discussed the difference between staged and altered photography and photography already .
second I am not the one that defines art.
I guess the first step would be to know the definition of art in the first place
the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. "the art of the Renaissance"
synonyms: fine art, artwork More "he studied art"
•works produced by human creative skill and imagination. "his collection of modern art"
synonyms: fine art, artwork More "he studied art"
•creative activity resulting in the production of paintings, drawings, or sculpture. "she's good at art"
2.
the various branches of creative activity, such as painting, music, literature, and dance.
So I guess the key words in both definition is creation and production. Which of course photography does neither. You are only recording something that is already there as stated before not creating or producing anything at all.
now if you stage a photo once again that is totally different because you are creating a piece of art and then capturing it. The photograph is not the art though, what you photographed is the art.

There are more detailed workflows, but the basics for remedial students:
Workflow
What makes fashion photography different? >>
fashion photography is done with setting up lights, flash speed, backgrounds, you get models ready with costumes and makeup and then use photoshop to enhance the photos. You actually create the photo you do not capture it .
You don't mean just fashion photography, you mean commercial photography.
Once the shoot is over I have to make sure the images are delivered to the client and the retoucher, and supervise the retoucher to make sure he doesn't go too heavy handed and lose the vision of the image
I've got several fashion accounts, as well as brokerage houses, kids toys, and cosmetics.
Like the athletes on the field, the photographers on the sidelines at an event like the superbowl are at the top of their field. If it was easy everyone would do it.
Back to the original topic, I pity the guy in the pit at the concert that had try and see around Randy Johnson. >>
hey man I have seen instagram and everyone does do it ! lol I think a person with no training at all could capture a beautiful photograph but I do not think you could replicate that with an person never trained to paint creating a masterpiece. Or picking up a chisel and pounding out the David statue. I mean if Randy Johnson can do it lol
but yes I mean any staged photography which includes commercial , etc
Maybe I'm in the minortity because I actually have some favorite sports photographers, guys like Hy Peskin and Neil Leifer. Even Instagram was mentioned, check out the photos by Brad Mangin - he did a whole season of Instagram baseball photos that are just amazing. Let's face it, we know bad photography, lots of baseball cards have bad photos.
<< <i>lol so now if I use a tape recorder to record music I'm a musician ? You are taking a picture of something already there. It is a device recording something, an image ,a capturing of light.

here are a couple of quotes that agree with what I said by some of the most celebrated photographers ever
"Sometimes I do get to places just when God’s ready to have somebody click the shutter. "
Ansel Adams
"Every other artist begins with a blank canvas, a piece of paper… the photographer begins with the finished product. "
Edward Steichen

I'll reply against my better judgment.
A good photog needs to know how to work with composition elements, light source and shadows, depth of field, balance, how to capture movement, perspective, background, handling the subject matter, lines and curves, post-processing, correct aperture and shutter speed, cropping, selective focus, ISO and film speed, white balance.
Other than that, you're right it's just luck
I'm not drunk, so this thread is confusing.

I love both of those guys, along with (just to name a couple) Walter Iooss and Marvin Newman.
I'm pretty sure the '84 Fleer Hubbard pic is from Veterans Stadium in Philly. Not sure what the festive occasion was. Maybe "Boo Mike Schmidt Day"?

<< <i>not much involved in taking a pic, just point a camera and click lol
the only "art" where the finished product is already made all you have to do is capture it. >>
yeah, that's why photographers make thousands a day, they just press a button, nothing to it. >>
Haha. I knew Anthony was going to take exception to that comment.

well first we already discussed the difference between staged and altered photography and photography already .
second I am not the one that defines art.
I guess the first step would be to know the definition of art in the first place
the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
"the art of the Renaissance"
synonyms: fine art, artwork More
"he studied art"
•works produced by human creative skill and imagination.
"his collection of modern art"
synonyms: fine art, artwork More
"he studied art"
•creative activity resulting in the production of paintings, drawings, or sculpture.
"she's good at art"
2.
the various branches of creative activity, such as painting, music, literature, and dance.
So I guess the key words in both definition is creation and production. Which of course photography does neither. You are only recording something that is already there as stated before not creating or producing anything at all.
now if you stage a photo once again that is totally different because you are creating a piece of art and then capturing it. The photograph is not the art though, what you photographed is the art.
<< <i>Also, if photography is as easy as pushing a button, why do my pictures always come out like crap? >>
the debate was never that it was easy or no skill is involved , just that its not art and no talent is involved.
