The info below this is from last year.
Hello all. I hope this is alright to do. I would just like to make a post related to something myself and many of friends are involved in. It is called THON which is the largest student run philanthropy in the world. All of the money raised goes to The Four Diamond Foundation to help kids with cancer. It goes towards cancer research and for patient/family support. We are currently just over 11 days away from the dance marathon. THON has raised just over $101 million for pediatric cancer in its existence, and raised over $12 million last year. We are hoping to top that number this year once again. It is a great cause and quite the eye opener to be involved in. There are 2 links below. One to make a donation, and the other one is the 2014 THON promo video. Any donations, large or small, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

2010-11 Annual Report
Roughly $.14 cents of every dollar goes to pay medical bills for patients or to fund providers, exclusively in Central PA. The majority of the money, if you read the report, went toward institutional endowments, etc. Given that Penn State Hershey ranks #94 nationally in NIH Funding in medical research, if you are not directly impacted by this institution in Central PA, you may want to consider donating locally or to a larger research facility.
I just felt that if a request for donations was on the board that full disclosure would be helpful. Again, do what you want and any dollar toward helping kids with cancer is a good thing!
<< <i>I would just caution those outside of Central PA to look closely at the Four Diamond Funds annual report before donating as you may find there are better ways to donate to cancer research if you want your money to have a larger impact.

Thank you very much for the clarification. Yes, $0.14 of every dollar goes towards helping to pay medical bills and other bills such as travel to hospitals for families. The other $0.86 goes towards general pediatric cancer research and a few other small things.
I don't want to make it sound like I'm begging for donations or anything. I just wanted to make a post about it and give people the option to help out. It's a big deal here and it's a year long fundraiser and is coming to an end soon.
Anyone can ask me any questions about it if they would like more info.
Thanks!

another great charity that I will donate to

If your fundraising saves ONE child from having to go thru what Francesca went thru ... it was a success!
THE MONEY THAT IS SPENT ON RESEARCH IS KEY! THAT IS WHAT HELPS SAVE LIVES! Francesca was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The survival rate, when she was diagnosed, was about 80 - 85%. When I was her age, the survival rate was about FIVE percent.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
It's a very worthy cause

<< <i>I'll bump this to see if we can find any more interest!
It's a very worthy cause >>
Thanks for the bump! And I really appreciate any donations that have been made. Thank you very much! As said before, every little bit counts. Doug thank you for sharing your story. Its stories like that, that make me want to try to help out any way i can. My little cousin, now 13 years old, was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago. He had a tumor in his face. I cannot remember the exact type but it was a very rare form. Along the way he had treatments about 2 hours away in Philly, 5 times a week for about 3 months. As you can imagine, travel costs and things like that build up over time. The Four Diamonds Foundation helped them pay for those types of things, and it let me see first hand, the affect they can have on a family by helping them with the financial side of things. Since then, he is doing much better, the tumor has gotten much smaller, and is almost gone, and he is back at school and doing well. Thanks again for the donations, and like JHS said, lets see if we can get anymore interest. Ill try not to bump it very often.
