1987 O Pee Chee rip

I feel like ripping something. I'm sitting on about a half case of 1987 O-Pee-Chee baseball and thought I would take a stab at pulling a nice Bonds. The card is impossible to find with even remotely decent T/B centering. I've ripped over a case of this stuff and doubt I've pulled a Bonds that would grade a PSA 8. The last time I checked there were only 8 PSA 10 Bonds cards graded, it's a toughie.

Here's the box. I'm hoping to get this done before the Olympics start.

Probstein sold a PSA 10 Bonds a while back for $338. A PSA 10 Ryan would be a nice card at $75, also.

1/4 way through the box and it's slim pickings. With only 7 cards/pack the odds aren't in my favor.

Here are the "highlights" so far. image

    Boggs looks good.

Tim, I was watching that Bonds auction. There was a perfect storm of events and I never got my snipe in. Still kicking myself over that all these months later.

I've had really good luck with the 87 OPC boxes I've got when it comes to gum and wax. These boxes must have been stored in a freezer as the gum usually just slides right out of the pack, which is nice when there are only 7 cards/pack. The Boggs does look nice but I feel like all of the Boggs look nice. Sheet placement was big in 87 OPC as some HOFers can be easily found mint right out of the pack while others are just impossible to find well-centered. I think the Canseco in this set is particularly tough as well, or maybe I'm thinking of a different card. I believe the Nolan Ryan is usually in pretty good shape when you pull one, too.

That Mitchell card brings back memories. I remember hunting for his early cards when he blew up in, was it 1989?

Half way through the box now.

Rice looks good, too. Must be a Red Sox thing, LOL..

I remember Mitchell when he was with the Mets~a great player who Cashen traded because he thought he was a negative influence on Gooden and Straw (how ironic). I'm pretty sure he was probably one of the first PED users from that era.

    3/4 through the box now.

The Garvey is also one of the few cards I've pulled that had a gum stain on the back of it. Also starting to think that the checklists might be tough pulls as well. Gotta love the gold cup cards. If I remember correctly, Worrell was NL ROY in 86.

Pulled a Bonds, so that's the good news. The centering is actually above-average, however still not submittable and diamond cut to boot. It took my 5 boxes to pull my first Bonds back when I was ripping these regularly though so getting one is still fun. It will go into the pile with its severely off-centered brethren.

Last 1/4 of the box was pretty uneventful. I always liked this Carter card though as a kid. All geared up and ready to throw out a runner.

All in all, this was fun. I'm also doing a run of 87 OPC packs with all the HOFers showing on either top or bottom and unfortunately didn't find one I needed. Still stuck on 22/27.

Pulling a Bonds, even though they're always off-centered, is enjoyable. Who knows, maybe I'll rip another box later on. Just need to focus on not making it a box from a different 1980s year. image

Great stuff Arthur. I agree that the 1987 Carter card was one of his best.

I can see what you mean regarding the card placement of the sheet. That Puckett didn't stand a chance. Thanks for sharing your rip.

Yeah, some cards are just impossible. For the most part though the edges on the 87s appear to be better than previous years. Not sure if that's normal or if I just got lucky. All of my stash (almost two cases) came from two different sources so maybe I just got lucky. Too bad there isn't a McGwire, Larkin, or Greenwell in the OPC version.

Is this typical centering for 87 OPC??

Hey, it's better than 77 OPC, LOL!

In my experience, it was a little better than usual. Although there are some cards that are just perfect every time. I think the Pete Rose is usually mint+ right out of the pack.

Yeah, it's definitely better than the late-70s (although that's not really saying much).
