Sad. I also grew up watching Kiner broadcast Mets games and interview players for Kiner's Korner. He's very underrated as a player. Had he not gotten hurt, he probably would have flown past 500 HRs. RIP.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Just got an email from the Mets with a nice clip and article. The latter part of the piece provides some classic Kinerism moments, LOL..

That was a great read. Thanks for posting.

Listening to the Mets on a transistor radio was a huge part of my childhood.

He led the NL in HRs SEVEN YEARS IN A ROW! More years in a row than any man. Ruth led the AL SIX years in a row.
    STAY HEALTHY!

Nice that they sent that out to former players. image

Always enjoyed the Chan.9 in New York Met game coverage. Especially Doubleheader days. A double dose of Kiner,Murphy, and Nelson. Remember DH?

  • And Ralph was quite the swordsman. He was the Derek Jeter of this day.

Yes, a scheduled DH...the Mets had about 3 during the year

Very sad. Ralph, Bob and Lindsay all gone now and their kind will never return. The days of free tv and kids listening to games glued to the radio are done, but I will cherish them.

I still remember muting McCarver on the TV and listening to Murphy instead. The three of them were great.

    Rest in peace.

In spite of being a Braves fan, I watch a lot of Mets games because I like their broadcast crew and I was always happy when Ralph dropped by and sat in for a few innings. A warm and comfortable presence, a fabulous player and a generally wonderful man.

I was unaware of the stuff about Elizabeth Taylor and Ava Gardner. HR crowns are cool and all but that's at least equally impressive.
  • A couple of months ago I bought several Baseball Magazine Player Posters on eBay. Ralph Kiner's 1947 player poster happened to be one of them. It's strange that his is the only one that I have framed to date. I never knew much about him as he was a little before my time. RIP

Great clip of Kiner and McCarver singing Summer Wind by Sinatra in the WOR booth before a game in 1990.

I think Kiner may have been the prototype for the big swinging power hitter of today.... that is, go for the seats evey at bat. Tremendous power. I know a lot of folks will say that it was Babe Ruth, and that is a very fair argument. But Babe Ruth's lifetime batting average was .342. Like George Herman Ruth declared (paraphrasing) "I could hit .400 every year....but people don't pay to see me hit singles." You know what? I beleive him. Without question, the GREATEST player in any sport in any era. But back to the topic at hand, RIP Mr. Kiner. You won't be soon forgotten.

Those 3 announcers had a unique chemistry, each with their own style. And any 2 of the 3 together at any given time, meshed very well with each other. Never any sense of one upmanship between them. Just as an aside continuing the trip down memory lane, Lindsey wore some loud and wild sports jackets. This predated the Craig Sager era of wild jackets. Lindsey also announced football games in his day.
