Too early to talk March Madness?

MGLICKERMGLICKER Posts: 7,995 ✭✭✭
The sporting slate is getting thin.

Perhaps the Winter games will add a bid of excitement to the calendar.

Grambling State makes a surprise turnaround ... right now they are ranked LAST in the NCAA Power rankings.

    Maybe 20.

How many players could I name?

    1 or 2.

We're only 18th in the rankings...good for a mere 5 seed, certainly not where we need to be if we intend to be a Final Four contender. But we still have a little over a month left, so we just need to put our nose to the grindstone and just try a little harder (we are NOT letting LOSERville stay ranked higher than us, no sir! image ).

And I got to ask, where did this San Diego State (Tony Gwynn's alma latter?) and Wichita State come from and how did they get all the way up into the top five? Shoot, Wichita State is still running the frickin' table!

As it stands now they say we're on track for a mere 7th seed...and even if we did manage to secure a rematch with top ranked Florida and beat them for the SEC Tournament title...I can't imagine it'd upgrade us to more than a 5. YES I am well aware that anything can happen in the NCAA Tournament (being single elimination does that), but our odds of even making it out of the first weekend (much less a Final Four appearance, which by KY standards we expect to be usually in most years be good enough to have a reasonable shot at...for Pete's sake we have THIRTY-FOUR Elite Eight apperances) are very bleak indeed. image

You know the expression about putting all your eggs in one basket? Maybe for next season Cal won't have too many one year wonders and perhaps get back to basics...for example what is so wrong with good ol' fashioned homegrown KY players, like in the good ol' days? Or at least do something to make them want to stick around for at least 2-3 years so they can get experience...because obviously experience is vital for success in ANY sport.

Well we are indeed getting our rematch with Florida tomorrow! image And wasn't that so cute of the Georgia coach whining about the Georgia Dome being called"Catlanta"? If he doesn't like it then get some of his students/fans in the seats...he probably makes a few million year just like our coach does so it's not like he couldn't comp their tickets once in awhile image

And I'm not so sure about this Florida team...they sure seemed to have trouble against Tennessee so that's gotta be a good sign for us right? And if we can beat these guys (or at least come real close) then that's gotta be a good sign for the NCAA Tournament right?

In what year has the tournament NOT been wide open? And now with 7:41 left we're within two measly buckets of the so-called #1 team in the country? Geez when they beat us last time we were figured for dead but now... EDIT: We're within one point with 45 seconds left! Whoo-hoo! image

PS: I was at Rupp Arena back in 2002 or 2003 when he upset the #1 ranked team at home for the first time since 1979...and that #1 team couldn't hold on to it for 24 hours before they choked against us! Anybody wanna take a guess who that #1 team was? image

EDIT: We can make Florida kick the bucket with a bucket! Can we do it? image

We've done it before. We can do it again.

EDIT: Nope, we couldn't even get a shot off because our sneakers were too greasy or something. image But that's okay because even if we didn't quite finish the job we have to figure we got just as good a chance as anyone if we were able to make the #1 ranked team go the distance.

Apparently it didn't help our seeding none...we drew a mere 8 seed. Still, once we get past Kansas State I am VERY much looking forward to us having a shot at crashing Whitica State's undefeated season, just like we did against Clown U in '75! image And then we might get a shot at LOSERville next! image

Not sure who "Clown U" is but were you even alive in 1975? image

So could say we are looking to shock the Shockers? image I mean c'mon we would've upset Florida if he hadn't literally slipped up on that last possession, so I see no good reason why we don't have as good a chance as anyone.

And Clown U is Indiana. I mean c'mon they do wear those candy stripe pants and back in the 70s Knight (sorry, MR Knight or COACH Knight image ) did have that comical colorful plaid blazer. image And boy did he have some sour grapes after that '75 game (he wouldn't even shake Joe B Hall's hand afterwards!) and I don't think even now can he live with himself for missing his chance at running the table in '75 (even though he did do so the next year and no other men's D1 b-ball team has done it since).

We not only were a 8/9 that knocked of a #1 but we knocked off an undefeated team in the tournament for the first time since 1975 and we are the lowest seed left in our quadrant...so why can't we be the underdog? I'm a KY fan who (believe it or not) likes KY even better when they're the underdog. I mean c'mon it's not like we get to be in that position very often and I think we are only the what, 11th team or so to beat a 1 seed in the second round (and we're now the only school to crash TWO undefeated teams' parties in the tournament)? And the odds certainly won't be in our favor again the next game seeing as how Loserville is the defending champs and is again the much higher seed. But that's why we play the games, right?

<< <i>We not only were a 8/9 that knocked of a #1 but we knocked off an undefeated team in the tournament for the first time since 1975 and we are the lowest seed left in our quadrant...so why can't we be the underdog? We sure will be against the defending champs next weekend and you know what? I like KY better when we're the underdog and this season is a perfect example of how much better we do when everyone's counting us out. image >>

Are you a Kentucky fan bragging about beating a mid-major? Lol. #championships >>

It's a good win but it's not that big of a win. What was Wichita favored by? 3 or 4? Your team was the preseason #1, has a ton of McD's all-Americans, and simply underachieved this year. I had Kentucky winning that game so not a surprise, or shall I say a "shock," to me. I have Louisville beating them this week. However, if Kentucky plays that well again they could definitely pull the win. As a UCLA fan it's banner #12 or bust! I'll get excited whenever that happens... hopefully in my lifetime!

ESPN re-seeds the field. Interesting they put Kentucky as a one seed now. Stanford as a 2. UCLA as a 4? I know UCLA played two nobodies but they whooped them.

Oh no no no no no, we're a mere 8 seed and Loserville is a 4 seed and the defending champs. You're supposed to tell us that we got no chance! image No we need everyone to pick against us for both Loserville and later Michigan...but then come Sunday it'll be US wearing the caps/shirts! image

larryallen73, we just became the only school in history to TWICE crash an undefeated team's party in the Big Dance...and I can't believe not hardly a PEEP is mentioned about us doing the same thing in 1975. So yes we do still have plenty more work to do come Friday/Sunday but at this point that's about as big and historical and unique a win as it gets in our school's history.

As a kid and young adult in the 1960's and early 1970's who played hoops in middle school, high school and small college I have always liked the Wooden UCLA teams and the title's that they won.

After Wooden's last title in 1975, it took the Bruins another 20 years to win another title. That was 19 years ago and it would be nice to see another banner hung up in Westwood.

He did say one of my favorite inspirational quotes (and he had a bunch of 'em): Don't let what you can't do interfere with what you can do.
