LOL. That^ is pretty much what I was thinking. Valuable to the top end collector but extremely thin market at that price level. Pickers want to find this coin, not buy it.
Don't know as I just picked it up from the PCGS Las Vegas show at 9:30 this morning. The show was over and they were packing up so, I suspect next week?

Thanks, I couldn't get the pop report to pull up and cert said not avail yet but it was just my browser...Awesome score!!!
$8K for an AU ? NOT. I would be happy to see this make it into an MS holder at PCGS, but I'm taking a skeptical position. The area at the cheek in particular has the grey tone often associated with high point rub on an AU. I see it in the hair over the ear also, and on several points in Liberty's cap.

He thought that big hit to the face was going to hold it back!!
Very nice and good to see it graded well. I thought 62 when I first saw this thread but the luster comes through great in the slabbed photo and makes it look better.
Good for you Bob! I still don't care for the grey colored patch below Liberty's eye, aft of the die break, as well as the grey coloration on the ribs of Liberty's ear. Sure looks like high point rub in the latest images. What is YOUR take on that appearance ?

I couldn't dispute these numbers Dennis, but the reality of it is that this just demonstrates there are at least 3 collectors with a feverish affliction of vanity brought on by the Registry set virus. There are two other 1B H-10's in my immediate circle that have been shown to me in the last year, which brings me to the opinion that these will gradually appear in sufficient numbers to make them available at far lower levels to those who don't suffer from the Registry vanity virus. Your mileage may vary. And maybe if Wabbit keeps on trolling here long enough, he'll hook on to a whale.
Ever-increasing supply is an inevitable fact of nearly every variety known. But so is demand for the most popular and visible ones. High on that list of Morgans – my opinion is it's #1 – is the Scarface.

I disagree. Here is why. Part of the Scarface Die State Progression has 12 stages. The Major stages are the H8, H9, & H10. The rarest is the H0 and H1-EDS. I have spoken to three collectors that are putting the full set together. There are about 7 total collectors that need these.
Now PCGS has graded about 100 Scarface H8-H10. Of those 15-20 are probably crack out regrades. So the total pop is probably closer to 80 at PCGS. The population is 10 in MS63, 1 in MS63+, & 2 in MS64.
One other factor is the H8 has two die progression H8 & H8.5. A few collectors want both.
Now look at the number of Top 100 collectors. The scarface is a major accomplishment to add to a collection.
Despite what AUandAG found, the scarface is a very rare cherry pick. Even non Morgan collectors know what it is. Probably 90+% of true scarface Morgans are known by the person holding that coin. Also you never see them circulated that means they were released mostly from treasury vaults.
I doubt you will find more than a handful of these coins being cherry picked in your lifetime. The only way more come out is if a bag of unopened 1888-O Morgans is found with them.
My point is your not going to see a major increase in Population of scarface Morgans.
And with only 13 PCGS MS63 and Higher true scarface Morgans, This coin will still carry a premium in the 10k range.

<< <i>My point is your not going to see a major increase in Population of scarface Morgans. >>
And my point is that you're not going to see a major increase in the number of VAM collectors who are willing to spend $10,000+ for any single coin, regardless of how rare it is. The demographics of the hobby just don't support the belief otherwise. Certain dealers / numismatists have done a fantastic job of bringing Morgan and Peace VAM collecting in to the mainstream of the hobby, but no amount of promoting is going to change the economic demographics that directly affect purchasing power. Reality bites.

I disagree. Regardless of the Economics conditions, the people collecting these are not saving pennies to buy their next coin. Watch the two MS62 Scarface Morgans at Heritage right now. Those coins will settle between $5,600 and $8,000 for the H10 and a little less for the H8. (A few months ago an ANACS MS62 OGH sold for $5,600 to a dealer who crossed it to PCGS).
There are three types of buyers of these. First Collectors that needs this coin. Second, Dealers that will resale. Third, collectors that have one already and will buy it to keep the price high to protect their investment.

Metal distortion caused by the die crack. Light reflected off the coin at a different angle due to the
non flat surface of the coin.
In hand it looks 63 all the way. Photos seem to add shadows/rubs/scuffs that are not there but
caused by the crack itself.
