I went 1/5 last night, but did win this very cool siege klippe

I lost out on the four lots that I preferred over this, but this is no mean consolation prize... (If I hadn't already have such a successful January, I'd have bid much stronger on the previous four lots too.) This was the final lot of interest to me, so I was able to bid more to avoid total disappointment.

The two dealers who handled this piece prior to the seller last night are both long-time veterans who feel this is an UNC piece. And, the seller held this piece for many years (from his personal collection). So, regardless of what its true grade should be, I guess this piece is pretty darn nice.

Hope you enjoy this.

(Best of all, this klippe is NOT in an over-sized holder. image )

wow I really like that piece - what an interesting buy - you bet that piece is MS - should be in a 62 holder - look at the details and original surfaces - the reverse is normal can't grade that side only the strike side on these - man you did good even if you think you lost out on others image

Great looking coin! I love the Klippes!! If it makes you feel any better, I went 1/4 last night in the gmarguli auctions. image Some of the pieces I was watching (not bidding on) went for absolute moon money. Good for Greg, bad for me. image

That is truly a lovely piece. I've not seen that type before.
It definitely has a great look to it. I can see why it stayed in someone's collection for while, as I'd be quite happy to own it.
    Congratulations.

EVP – beautiful piece. The combination of a crude design and sharp strike are quite alluring. Is it a siege issue?

I was 1/1 myself - I decided to pursue the 1.5 medallic taler (aka 1 ½ Regiments Taler) from Munster for my set. Not a rare issue, but difficult to find pieces with original surfaces and no cleaning or mounts. I’ve seen some examples that have been scrubbed and polished like a dinner plate.

I went 3:5 in Greg's auction. But I wasn't bidding on the klippe. I would've liked to very much, but the bidding was already beyond me at halftime. Actually I watched a tape with a delay because I had to work until 7:30, so I'm not 100% what time it was.... but when I saw the bidding over $1k it became obvious that I was not going to be a winner.

You never know with Greg's auctions re: moon money, BRG. There've been times when I won a $950 (list) coin for $75 because nobody was watching. But on Super Bowl night, everyone watches.

So Greg has a following... How oddly disconcerting. Anyone watch the TV show The Following, with Kevin Bacon? image

When you put up a few hundred high-end coins every few weeks, I think a following is expected, no? image

Re: the TV show -- nope never seen it, but it pops up on my Netflix everytime I log in saying I would probably like it.

Lovely coin in the OP. I went 0/4 and chased a couple of them right up.

BTW, I found this excerpt from a past CNG auction of this coin (but not this exact coin):

During the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), France fought against the forces of the Austrian Habsburgs to protect its claims on Spanish lands after the death of the Spanish king Charles II. Several nations, including England and the United Netherlands, joined Austria against the powerful French forces. Landau, a fortified town located in modern southwest Germany, was besieged by one of the most prominent figures of the war, Claude Louis Hector de Villars, Marshal General of France. Duke Carl Alexander of Württemburg defended the town, which fell to the French on 20 August 1713. Soon after, Villars himself negotiated the Treaty of Rastatt, ending hostilities between King Louis XIV of France and Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI of Austria. A series of klippes was produced by Landau during the French siege, likely cut from the silver plate of the town’s rich citizens.

Love the history. And a nice clean display slab to boot, as EVP mentioned. Great NEWP indeed!

I like it as well. These are always tough to find nicely preserved. I used to have a few Austrian Klippes, in smaller denominations which I had sold.

I still have this Double Taler Storm Klippe which I like a lot.

I finally got my Landau siege klippe today. OMG, it is a tremendously attractive coin. The luster is powerful and full, and the toning very vibrant (no doubt due to the luster). The graders must've been on something powerful the day they graded this piece because it looks gem-quality to me.

Beyond its technical, assessed grade, this coin's eye appeal is off the charts in hand.

Sorry -- I just noticed that you called this an UNC initially. Hope one day PCGS will prove you right in the *other* direction. image

Regardless, this coin has sweet eye appeal.

That is awesome. And I wouldn't doubt it was MS for a second.

I've never had the guts to do an auction. For one I'm afraid of over spending with the buyer's premium ($15?) plus shipping (min $7), so I stay away.

Anyways, you have an amazing Klippe. That's a very cool piece!
