I am not ashamed to admit that I got a little choked up when I heard the good news, because I knew how much it meant TO HIM!

I watched his entire career, and this guy was a weapon - and could flip a field with his hang time and directional punting unlike any punter.

A punter is a position, and now the position is superbly represented by the NFL's finest. Thanks for starting the thread.

About damn time at least a token punter is included. I mean seriously, it is just so silly to have only one kicker and now a HOF-elect punter (he isn't REALLY a HOFer until he actually receives his bust/gold jacket, hence the -elect part), and while they are definitely not the positions that get "all the chicks" (I think even in the locker room they often are not treated as "real" football players), anyone with even a basic knowledge of football knows how vital it is to have a truly reliable kicker and punter...think of the embarrassing disaster that will result for the whole if more than a precious few kicks or punts are blocked/missed. image

PS: They didn't like wait till he was 70-80 or something I hope...

The thing that blows me away is that he had something like 1,050 punts, and NONE of them ever got returned for a TD.

Guy was such a great athlete, that he was the Raiders third-string quarterback. Critics will point to the fact that his 42.4 yds/punt average wasn't that high relative to other punters, but what was the average return on his punts? Bet it wasn't very high.

As a long time Raider fan I have said for years on these boards Guy belongs in the HOF.

He did have avg for 6 seasons I believe...but he kicked them miles high and distance was still there.

So many times I saw him handle very bad snaps..and even run for a 1st down.

He could change a game unlike any punter before or since.

He was a punter, not a QB. Just like how Dennis Eckersley didn't really blossom into a HOF-type until he made the closer position truly fashionable. And were there any other eligible punters that did better?

Again I'm not as knowledgeable about football history as I am baseball history but it sounds like by all accounts that Ray Guy is by far the most qualified to be the first ever punter to get a bust/gold jacket.

Long overdue, and couldn't happen to a nicer person.
He was scary accurate as far as placement of the ball.

    RIP Mom- 1932-2012
