Advice Needed - Junk Silver

I have a co-worker whose mother passed away recently. He came to me since he knew I dabbled with coins. He found bags, boxes, jars, etc. filled with what I assume is junk silver. Dollars, halves, quarters, dimes and nickels but to the 1900's. He needs to sell it as it's part of the siblings inheritance. Since I have no idea whether there are any key dates, I'm looking for opinions on how this community would dispose of the coins. There is a decent coin shop here in town (size-wise) but I have never enjoyed the interaction with the people. They have never done me any injustice; they are just not that friendly. Thanks for any advice.

Your first order of business is to separate out the silver, and in order to do a reasonable job you will have to educate yourself to some degree.

Is the question how should he dispose of the coins or how would we, if we had the loot?

I read it to mean that he had to sell them in order to satisfy the heirs

Oh man. First and foremost , it's not a matter of disposing of. It's a matter of discriminating against, with the keenest eyes until some assemblage and "order" takes place. Until then it's a treasure trove.

Start by making an inventory. Individual counts of the number of dimes, quarters and halves dated 1964 and earlier. Separate count for the number of halves dated 1965-70. Also a separate count for all silver dollars dated 1935 or before. Anything newer than these stated dates do not contain silver and by and large are worth only face value.

If you can do that you can sell them on the Buy-Sell-Trade board here on the PCGS website for close to retail value. Going into some shops could get you as little as half as much.
    When in doubt, don't.

This is how would dispose of a collection like this:

First, sort Key dates & ultra pristine coins, and set aside to sell individually on EBAY...if you have the time, search for rare varieties (purchase the cherrypickers guides), sort and sell individually. Take an inventory and some good pics, and sell the balance of the "junk" all in one lot on EBAY. Expect to pay about 15% between EBAY and Paypal fees. This method has worked for me on many occasions ;-)

    Good luck ;-)

Don't mess with Ebay for the junk
Find a medium or large size show in your area. Sell to Silvertowne or some other GOOD SIZE dealer (not a Mom & Pop operation). You should net more with much less hassle.
The smaller dealers often sell their bulk to them anyway to keep from having to transport it home.

Start here to see which ones have silver.

Then look at the PCGS price guide to get an idea of what years have extra/strong value.
