1984 Donruss Wax Box Rip!

Despite 1984 being the heyday of my collecting career, and despite Donnie Baseball being my idol growing up, I have never owned an '84 Donruss Mattingly RC. That all changes tonight!
Remember going to a card show in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn in 1984. There was a cute girl working one table - that sure was a rarity - and she cajoled me into spending $35 - an unheard of sum - for a '84 Donruss wax box. She said it was relatively rare. Huh, I guess she was sort of right.
It was a good box, the only '84 Donruss I ever owned. Yielded a ton of 9s (of which a few may be resubbed). a PSA 10 Vance Law, an o/c Joe Carter. And two Strawberrys - a PSA 9 and a PSA Gem Mint 10!
But no Mattingly.
Let's hope for some Mattinglys!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
I'm kinda like you- Despite this being one of the unbelievably iconic cards of my collecting youth, I could never manage to pull it back then, and the other kids would want half my collection for these things! Finally ripped a couple boxes a couple of years ago and got one.
Here's hoping for the Double Matty!
I will stay tuned in and watching.

A few packs in - nothing earth-shattering. And no Donnie. But still plenty of box to go. Hope springs eternal.

They call me "Pack the Ripper"
More to come tonight!
<< <i>FWIW, I did not get a Brett, Schmidt, Henderson, Rose or Mattingly in the box I ripped in 1984. So I am hoping that means a Mattingly is coming in this box!

Hey Chris, I bet that Mattingly is in one of my boxes.

Mike - I am sure there are a slew of minty PSA 10 Mattinglys in your boxes. Alas, the world may never know!
<< <i>Golden Gate Motel Card show? >>
Don't recall the venue. It was a pretty busy show in a decent-sized room. Summer of '84.

<< <i>One observation about 1984 Donruss - their Diamond Kings aren't very regal. Jim Clancy anyone? >>
Not too bad. In 1982 and 1983 he was 8th, and 19th in the league in ERA+ for those years. Not HOF dominant, but worthy of a Diamond King card
Plus he threw 266 innings in '82, second in the league.
Ok maybe a better example would be Mr. $3500 himself - Matt Young.

<< <i>Ah, I'll never forget the girl who sold me the Donruss box, sigh.

I can relate to this picture. The implements of a box rip here. Stacks of card savers and penny sleeves.

Holy crap - only six packs left!

Two packs left.

Chris, you got some nice star power but I know you were looking for Donnie Baseball. Here's hoping he is in one of those last 2 packs.
