Pack Rips: 1978 Topps Baseball & 1979 Topps Wax Packs **1979 Topps Grades In**

I got some fresh card saver Is, which are in need of filling out, and figured what better candidate for that task than a 1978 Topps baseball rack pack!

Good luck Tim! Lets see some minty fresh cards.

OK, first up, the far right cell furthest from the header card. This is the "high letter" section in which you should find only cards from the E and F sheets, which includes all the 78 Rookie cards, which also includes, of course, the Molitor RC. I did pull two 78 Rookie cards in this section, but sadly neither was a Molly, though the Easler RC did look pretty sharp. It has also been my experience that centering in this far section is typically the toughest of the three cells in the rack. These three cards were the best of the 13 cards in that cell. I vaguely recall that the Hill is a tough one and this eaxmple has really strong color and registration.

Middle letter (C/D) sheet was a total bust, all cards were OC T/B...need some redemption in the header section, which is the money (A/B sheets) section, lots of HOFers including the Murray RC!

Well, I did get some star power in the low letter section~an OC Morgan and an OC Brett that I scanned here. The Garner and Remy cards actually look pretty nice and will take a trip to Newport Beach...

Now I know why I stopped ripping 72 OPC wax way back when, LOL..

It was a series 1 pack, which was a nice surprise but centering was horrid throughout. Half decent Fingers was the best card. I love the 72 OPC wax, too~pinker and more sugary than any other pack I've ever opened! Hard to believe I pulled a PSA 9 Thurman Munson card from one of these packs way back when...

No more racks, but have two 79 wax packs , one with popped seal, so why not round out the trifecta..

Above average centering in these two packs~no big hits, star-wise, pop a sharp Hunter and some minty fresh commons..

2nd pack wasn't quite as nice as the first, but as far as Tony is concened, the Bowa equates to a HOF pull, LOL!

Looks like you may have a couple from each year that may earn a round trip to California.

    Good Luck and keep ripping!

    Thanks again, guys!

Of course, after the encouraging results on the two 79 wax packs I opened last night, I had to go back to the well once more this morning, LOL..

But only for those packs with a defect--a broken piece of gum, a trace of white on a corner, only those packs, not the good ones. It's amazing how strict I can become regarding condition when rippage awaits! image Mike, don't look, LOL..

I also had a pair of raw 1980 OPC packs that boasted a coupel of HOFers--Carew has a slight tilt, but Eck looks very sharp! I know some don't care for it, but I love the rough cut on OPC cards from this era--to me it just confirms the cards are genuine and straight out of the pack!

Any opinions on how the 79 Fisk might grade?

Tim...it all starts with a broken piece of gum or a simple white corner fold. Next thing you know you are lying in a pool of empty wrappers and stale gum. Always good to see your breaks and I am glad that some of your unopened has blemishes so we get to see what is inside.

I think the Fisk is likely a 7-8 given the T/B centering, slight tilt and a touch on the bottom left corner. Those other 79's sure look sharp though.

    Thanks, Chris, LOL!

I just love the action shot on that Fisk card but wish it were centered a bit better. The others are really sharp--I have to check and see if there are any low pops in the group.

Thanks for sharing the rip results. Just curious on the Fisk, right below the D in RED SOX, is that a slight imperfection along the bottom edge? Another one perhaps, even smaller, below the R. But maybe my eyes are deceiving me image

Nothing below the R in Red but there is a very small chip on bottom edghe below the D. It's more noticeable in the enlarged scan than held in hand, though the centering likely relegates that card to an 8, in any case.
