I know it's a 1/1, but why does a 1984 Donruss card sell for $3,500.00 ?

    I agree with Dpeck. That card at first seems like its tilted in the holder but upon closer inspection, its not. Is it possible that the card was trimmed on BOTH sides to make it look even? 84 Donruss is known to have thin stock cards and they also vary in size but this is just beyond that.

    No, the 3500 one is a 10

    These steele diamond kings are from factory sets and extremely difficult to find centered. There's a lot of competition at the top of the 84D master set registry

    No, cards from factory sets (as are all the steele cards), are cut a little smaller than those from wax. This magnifies the centering problems even more, as the edge of the image is closer to the edge of the card.

    I've been chasing these steele diamond kings for a long time. I haven't landed a big 10 yet. I just got a 9 on a Parrish, which is about as close as I've come


    Edit to add: I agree this card isn't a great 10, with the tilt, but might be as close as we will see to a 10 on this card

    WOW you are not kidding. It looks like the Hill collection took this baby home. This was the missing puzzle piece to complete the set in all 10's.

    That may be the guliest 10 I have seen. I would say 8 at best. tilt is horrible and it is OC on top IMO.

    IMO, High prices paid for what I consider 'modern' stuff like this card will cause the next bottom to fall out of the card market. Everyone does remember this stuff was way over produced??? Yes, even the '84 Donruss cards. Pops will rise when others see what these modern cards sold for. Then the market prices will tank.

    There is obviously no shortage of 84 donruss cards. But these are a true condition scarcity. I've opened many of these factory sets, and even if every remaining factory set is opened, you're not gonna see more than a few more 10s of Young, Clark, Schmidt, etc

    Just amazing. And this hobby/business is like no other. $3500 for an extremely common common, but because of this PSA registry the seller knows the owner of "The Hill Collection" needs only that card to complete all PSA 10....and the assumption would be that he'd pay whatever he has to...in this case, $3500. Any shilling suspicions?

    None! It was one of PWCC's new BIN cards. $3,500 was the price set by the consignor.

    I saw the last Pop 2 of these sold for $2,200 so I am sure the owner just set a price and this whale gobbled it up.

    Or some type of qualifier. When I see cards like that in my collection, I would never think it worthy to submit.

    Congrats to the Hill Collection for completing his set in all PSA 10s. With the Steel/Steele variations and the centering issues throughout, that is quite the feat!

    Because it's not a "real" 1/1. It's only "1/1" if there really is only one copy in the whole world and marked as such with "1/1". After all, as soon as another one shows up slabbed in the same grade, bam! No more 1/1... image

    Looks like I need to go through my boxes of "commons" to make sure I don't have a $3,500 gem sitting around.

    The bottom hasn't fallen out yet...set registry building (and competing) is ridiculous!...my guess is that one of the big dealers (perhaps it was PWCC) submitted that card for the consignor, hence the "favorable" grade. And shockingly, everyone turns a blind eye (or pretends it doesn't matter), but when a $0.99 common fetches $3,500, that's just sickening. It shows you what happens when favoritism plays a hand in a subjective grading process.
