I love the 80's: Friday Night Pack Rip 1982-1987 Run

Thought it would be fun to take a stroll down memory lane and rip some wax, cellos and racks from my hayday collecting years. For those who like older pack breaks, up for your viewing pleasure is a run of packs from 1982- 1987 (sorry, no 70's packs this round). Specifically we have:

1982 Donruss Wax Pack
1983 Fleer Cello Pack
1984 Topps Rack Pack
1985 Donruss Rack Pack
1986 Topps Wax Pack
1987 Donruss Blister Rack Pack

Hoping to land some favorite rookies of Ripken, Sandberg, Boggs, Gwynn, Mattingly, Strawberry, Clemens, Puckett, Maddux and the like. Got my beverage of choice fully loaded (I am hoping to be fully loaded soon too), and the packs lined up for ripping. Thanks to those who follow along!

Thought I would start with 1987 and work my way down. This was clearly a Tom Seaver 'hot pack' since each of the three blisters had him in it. The good thing about 1987 Donruss blister racks is there is no sequencing....the bad thing is you can land three Seavers in the same rack.

  • Nothing like drinking some beers and opening some packs. Good luck and I'm pulling for ya'.

Thanks for all the well wishes gents. So I have always loved the design of the 1986 Topps. No rookie power, but this set does contain 33 HOF's and lots of memories. I grew up an Eric Davis fan and loved the look of this card. Always a thrill to pull this card and stare at it a few minutes. Anyone out there remember when people cared about this Rob Deer rookie? Yeah, me neither.

Speaking of Eric "The Red" Davis...man the borders on the 1985 Donruss are tough. Certainly no 10's to be had.

Tough love on the 1984 rack...but I do love Rollie's classic handlebar.

I love 86 Topps cards. If money were no object, I'd love to put that set together in PSA 10. Unfortunately, actually doing it would be like taking out 10K and just setting it on fire.

Always fun when Ryno makes an appearance...

And to close out the run...the 1982 Donruss pack was brutal! Best thing in the pack was the Babe Ruth puzzle piece.

Thanks to all those who followed along.

  • Looks like you did nicely with the Ryno and Davis. I do remember Rob Deer. From 87 and 88 he had some good years. But I think he was either a strike out or a home run.

What strikes me about the pic of Eric Davis on the 86 Topps is how wiry he looks. And he had pretty good power for that era.

I see it was another Schmidty pack rip. image

Thanks for sharing your rip and there is nothing wrong with some Seaver love. I actually need to find a 1987 Donruss rack with him on top for a Seaver rack pack run. Too bad he is in that crappy uniform. image

Hahaha...you said Schmidty. I have a couple of 87 Donruss rack cases, so I will be on the lookout for a Seaver pack to send your way Mike.

That would be great. I would really appreciate it as I don't think I'll find that 1974 Seaver rack pack I've been searched for. I'm sure Tim probably has it.

And he had pretty good power for that era.

Davis had "pretty good "power for any era. He uncoiled those wrists like a striking snake and the ball just shot. He had a season with 37 HR's and 50 SB's, while missing 33 games. He was a freak athlete. He would have been the first 40/40 and possible 50/50 if his body was not always breaking down.
