<< <i>I give up. What the heck are "resplandores"? Don't ever remember seeing this before. Olmanjon >>
Resplandores; also known as Cap'n'Rays, are Mexico Republic 8 Reales with the radiant cap design. I have meddled in the series, both authentic and counterfeit, in the past, but other than a single Type I 1842 Zacatecas 8R, no longer own any examples.
I have a complete set of Mo mint, all assayers and dates and have a spattering from the other mints. Eventually I want to obtain a really nice example of a rarity from all 14 mints. They are fascinating coins with a lot of history behind them. I encourage anyone who loves the history aspect of coin collecting to look into all the Mexican 8 reales series coins.
Wow! I have 8 of these in my collection and didn't know that was what they were called. Anyone care to explain why they were called this? Thanks in advance, Olmanjon
I like the series-I buy them when the opportunity arises which is not too often. This series heated up afew years back and there seems to be interest. I have no illusion about undertaking the hunt to complete a set.

The word "resplandor" loosly translates as "blaze" and, according to WordReference.com, refers to "clear light thrown or bounced from the sun or other luminous body." When you reference the design, this makes sense.
Love this series, but just to much info is needed to be learned to be any kind of an expert collector. Oh well! Will continue to collect them anyway and hope I don't get to burned.

Didn't know about that site - thanks for the link!
While on the subject, I think I still own www.resplandores.com, www.pillarsandportraits.com and www.8reales.com. Should check when the domain registrations expire since I haven't done anything with those in years.
BidAsk - that's a nice, scarce Cap'n'Ray
olmanjon - if you're interested in the series, i would highly recommend picking up Dunigan and Parker's book. If anything, it would help with not getting a counterfeit, since this is one of the heaviest counterfeited series.
Bid Ask That is a seriously nice example of a very difficult Mo mint Cap and Ray 8 reales to obtain. That would be a trophy coin in any Mexican coin collection and thank you so much for sharing with us. Just beautiful.

I buy them raw in circulated grades I like them with chop marks and without but I don't worry about date , mint or initials .
I can't imagine completing a set there are so many.
<< <i>I collect gem high grade for the type. Also own a couple scare dates .... >>
Same here along with the patterns.
I don't know anyone who collects them by VDAM (Variety Date Assayer Mint) at this time. There used to be several--McCormick, Parker, etc.

This is due to China. The Chinese consider these to be Chinese coins as they circulated in China.
