Just picked up some really sharp stars from the late 70's. Also a couple OC rookies of Murray and Ozzie. Going to post scans in the next hour or 2. Just need to know if they will be worth grading and if I am overlooking anything. Never did much with OPC in the past, so I am not 100% sure how PSA handles the rough cuts.

<< <i>Absolutely submit these cards. OPC are super tough for this era and command nice prices. The rough cut is also what you want to see on these as it confirms that cards are original and not sheet cut. >>
I actually picked up 2 of the 1978 Younts, and both are actually a little short when compared to other cards. But they have the rough cut. So we will see. Also the Pete Rose doesn't have much of a rough cut. But it does measure up and is really sharp.
The murray is often miscut badly. If it's square, you have a nice card.
Now, your key....the 77 Nolan Ryan. Would have to see a scan of the back. I have never seen one that is NOT miscut on the back though I know they are out there, just very tough.

N6s are unfortunately pretty common with 78 opc. But definitely worth a shot.

You called it on the 77 Ryan. I have two of them. Here are the pics of the front followed by the back. Also had another really nice 78 ryan. But there is some snow on his right arm. Will still probably send all 3 cards in.

<< <i>The second 77 Ryan has a shot to straight grade if they don't notice the piece of grass on bottom back. First Ryan is very likely going to get MC qualifier >>

I would not bother sending in the first 77 Ryan but I surely would the second. Thats one of the better ones I have seen as far as the back not being miscut. Only problem is that I see that card being graded a straight 6 due to the corners.
<< <i>send in both 77's. the first one should get an 8.5 or 9. the second one an 8 or 8.5. i have 2 of the 12 9's nolan ryan 1977 opc. >>
Disagree here.
The first will likely be a 9mc unless you get a grader that doesn't care about the grass on the back. The second, due to it's lower left corner will likely get a straight 7 or 7.5.
I wouldn't bother with the 78 Eck. Pop is pretty high and it's likely an 8.
Will that 83 Ripken even fit into a holder?
Very solid bunch of cards.

No way the first Ryan gets straight graded--any 77 OPC card with any sign of the grass on right edge gets MC qualifier. If it doesn't, it's misgraded.
Edit to add: What Puddy and Yankeeno7 said..

both of my 9's look identically cut. puddy's reference about the corner, i am not sure about that.

You're missing the point. The MC issue is on the reverse of 77 OPC cards--any sign of grass on the right edge should automatically saddle that card with a MC qualifier.

The second Ryan almost looks like print dots but it is the grass showing. It's barely there but there. First one, if graded correctly with the grass showing, without any doubt gets a MC. Might be able to slide that second one by, I'd probably roll the dice
As the hobby has gotten more and more intensive on grading, there is nothing more exciting than finding a sharp old lot of cards and going through them looking for the real gems to grade. The 2 I'd be most interested in hearing about would be the 1980 Molitor and the 1978 Bench. Those look like potential 10's...

<< <i>PSA wants rough cuts on OPC otherwise it might be deemed trimmed >>
I have many OPC PSA 9's and 10's that are not rough cut in the least. The blades on the cutting machine would get slightly duller as time went on. So the cards that were in the first rounds of cuts generally might be smooth before the blade starts to make the cuts a bit rougher. Some years are more prevalent than others.
My Robin Yount RC has very smooth edges:

As does the Bench:

And the Schmidt is almost always rough

It is definitely safe to say that the later the year the less likely you are to find rough cuts, particularly starting in the 80's, when they are far less common

<< <i>70's OPC didn't use blades to cut the sheets, they used taut wire. Not sure if/when they changed to blades. >>

As I stated earlier in this thread, I have opened a ton of late 70s opc wax and almost always have found the rough cut on at least one side. Personally, I like to see that when looking at OPC cards from thus era.
