Red Flip labelled Authentic

Recently bought same PSA labelled Authentic without anything else. Doesn't this usually mean the card has been altered and/or trimmed in some way? I thought they usually put the word trimmed or altered on the flip as well and not JUST Authentic. Or does this mean the person who sent them in requested a minimum grade and it didn't achieve it, so they just wanted the card to be slabbed authentic. Any help to clear this up would help. BTW these cards do not seem trimmed by my measurements.

I've got probably 10 or so red flips labeled 'Authentic' with no qualifier, and maybe around 5 with a qualifier of either 'Trimmed' or 'Altered'. All were self-subs. I always add a note with my subs requesting that each item be given a numerical grade but if it isn't possible for a particular item, to then label it as 'Authentic' rather than send it back to me raw so I still have the option of entering it into set registries if I don't want to crack out for a re-sub. SGC has a box to check on their forms for this service and it would be easier if PSA would add that same check box instead of having to put a note on your sub sheet if you want to request it. For my items that are labeled as Authentic w/o qualifier, most of the time I truly can't find a reason why they wouldn't be graded at least a 1, except for hand-cut items that weren't cut very straight.

Can you do that? I thought you had a choice of a # or "Authentic".

I also don't think anything is wrong with the cards. Some people may think that a slab labeled "Authentic" will sell for more than one with a "1" or "2".

Yes, you can. I just attach a post-it to my order sheet with the request as described above.

  • I don't think anything is wrong with the cards either. I want to sell them but I think I would do better cracking them out and giving them a raw grade then selling them slabbed as Authentic, because buyers might automatically assume they've been trimmed/altered? There's probably a good chance someone didn't want a low grade and think Authentic is better ( I personally don't think that's better), what do you think?
  • I had experience with this on 1949 Bowman cards. The double-printed backs were never cut by the company, but an employee got his hands on them and they were later cut by hand. PSA grades these cards as authentic, since they are the actual cards printed by Bowman, but does not give a grade since they are hand cut.
