Hand cut card question

Hello all. Regarding hand cut cards, I need a few for my Yount master Topps registry, what are the best strategies? Buy the box that contains the card? Get the card already graded? There seems to be a significant premium for some of the ones I've seen that are already graded. And of I did buy an uncut panel, what is the best way to cut to get the best graded, including what type of cutting instrument?

Also, in my opinion, getting hand cut cards graded is sort of BS. How can grading companies not grade cards that are trimmed, but ones you cut yourself are fine? I don't think many of them were designed to be cards anyway, just novelties on boxes. Okay, end of rant.

I think there is someone on the boards that can cut cards for you, just gotta ask around. Also, the hobby doesn't really condemn trimming/cutting, per se, as long as the card remains within the minimum size for that issue. This means it's ok to cut bottom box panels from boxes, cards from cereal boxes, etc. It's the guy that has the capability and uses his cutter to shave those rough edges to bring a card below the minimum size that infuriates collectors and buyers of raw cards.

PSA grades hand cut cards that can only be obtained by being cut from a panel, box, etc... That is the distinction that allows them to grade these. Just to be clear, for any other card issued from the factory already cut - trimming and other restoration is highly frowned upon. Depending on how much it's worth, the FBI might even take interest in trimming, LOL.

There is no best way to get the cards. There three ways and you see which you like more. 1) Pay for someone elses already graded card. Like you stated this can carry a premium. The bright side is you're guaranteed the card and grade you desire. Boom! 2) Source and cut them yourself. This may take time and effor to track down the right panel as the cut isn't the only thing you need to be aware of. There could be printing or surface issues that won't allow a gem grade no matter how well you cut them. There are a few cutters here on the boards, PM me and I'll share the advice I've received and what little I've learned for myself. You can browse the threads and see who is cutting their own and message them for info. I'm going to disclaim that I haven't had a gem grade on any card that I've hand cut yet, however, I think that is only because I haven't sent any in yet (waiting for a CC special). I have a few that I think will grade very well. 3) Source them yourself, farm out cutting. There are guys on the board who cut cards for others at a fee. Search around and you will find them on the boards here.

Good luck! Be sure to share the cards you've cut and their grades.
