At a coaches seminar in Oregon today, local resident and MLB Umpire Jim Joyce was on hand as a speaker.
Mr Joyce is truly an honorable guy, a real sincere human being, it was great to hear the stories.
Some highlights:
He was asked which player during his time best represents baseball both on and off the field, ambassador qualities, Ken Griffey Jr, "He can do it all"
Asked which are the greatest ballparks that he looks forward to visiting, "Beautiful parks" - Pittsburgh Pirates and Seattle Mariners (Safeco field).
Asked about his 2010 Gallaraga perfect game (Detroit Tigers) mis-call, he showed integrity in saying he called it the way he truly saw and felt from his heart, it was life changing in a personal and professional level.
After the game Jim Leland actually came back to Joyce's locker room closed the doors and told Joyce let's have a beer, smokes and talk about it (they are old family friends)
It was really interesting to hear about the big leagues from someone who lives in it.
Put's into perspective that everybody is just a human being, sometimes the attention, limelight and pressure can distract from the reality.
The life message from Joyce - Be Positive through it all and be honest with yourself.

<< <i>No offense to anyone here but I would have punched him in the face, a few days in jail to get at the guy that cost a man a perfect game with one of the worst, easiest missed calls in history, and don't worry I feel that way about all umpires, referees, and officials. Have a nice day. >>
That's kinda messed up, but ok.

Bad call, but he's still a great ump.
2010: In a recent poll conducted by ESPN The Magazine, Major League Baseball players voted Jim Joyce the best big league umpire.
2011: According to a poll conducted by Sports Illustrated and a report from CBS Sports, big leaguers voted Joyce the best umpire in the Major Leagues -- by a wide margin. He took 35 percent of the vote, followed by Tim McClelland (18 percent), Jim Wolf (7 percent), Laz Diaz (6 percent) and Joe West (5 percent).

Clearly you have never made a mistake in your job. Have you ever reffed a grade school sport? What about high school? Most likely not, but if you did - speed it up about 100 times and you will know that mistakes are made. It is how you recover from those is what matters.
that day he went 1 for 1.

LOL. You'd spend more than a "few days in jail" for that.

<< <i>Being a ref or an ump is a tough job.....I signed up to be a ref the last couple of years and despite spending my whole life around the sport it is a lot harder than it looks..... >>
I ref 7-8 hoops both boys and girls. I subbed for a buddy for a preseason high school boys basketball a few years back and it is just crazy the difference in speed. I can't imagine doing college or pro. Everything is bang bang.
<< <i>glad he was around when someone needed live-saving techniques. forget about the blown calls.

Joyce mentioned that there is only 1 Umpire school in the United States, in Florida and I believe it was a very tough course to pass according to Joyce.
Yesterdays seminar was at a baseball coaching forum, had Jim Dietz (former San Diego State coach) on hand and Oregon HS coaching legend Dave Gasser speaking on teaching fundamentals.
Joyce was kind enough to be the key note speaker.

But somewhere some purist would have his head explode if they did something like this to "their game".

Good thing Gallaraga is a bigger man than you.
