How often does PSA grade a "new" 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle? (or any other major card)

Or for that matter, any high profile card. Does any one track this to see if submissions are slowing down, as if to indicate high dollar cards are, for the most part, already graded?

I use the Mantle as an example, because it is iconic. Is there a place to look at Population Reports from previous time periods, say 2010 or 2006, etc?

Just curious.

It's too bad PSA's Pop Report isn't dynamic like Becketts where you can see the hisotry of all graded cards - all certas for a card, the grade, and when they were graded. I doubt what you are looking for is public, but an individual might be tracking that.

I'm sure there are quite a few. Just need to create a spreadsheet, copy/paste the pop report once a month, and voila.

  • Not so easy with cards like the 52 Mantle, Jordan Rookie, etc. because of re-submits. I would doubt there are very few Mantles being graded that are new to grading.

Pure speculation as to how many cards that were graded via a pop report or new to the grading process.

  • Good point on the resubmits.
With resubmits being fairly common - would that mean that the running total of items counter on the psa website is inflated?

I would agree that PSA's population report counts cannot be considered accurrate after time, whether low or high population.
Break out of holder and resubmissions cannot be accounted for.

This has always been a known issue that would affect every grading company regardless of tracking other information such as date/time/member submission history.

Call me naive, but if they offered a discount towards grading fees, people would be more apt to send them back and have pop reports more accurate. I believe they do this with coins already

the answer lies somewhere between today and the number of raw '52 Mantles or any high profile cards which are currently owned by people who don't care for 3rd party grading, until some of these examples get passed down or estates get liquidated.
  • FYI, I do have some old pop data at the set-level going back to 2008. However, not at the individual card level. Its interesting to contrast the types of grades generated between older sets, like 54 Topps vs a newer set like 82 Topps since 2008. The rate at which new PSA 9's are graded for the 54 set is lower post-2008 vs pre-2008. Conversely, 82 Topps PSA 10's are seen with a much higher frequency post-2008 than pre-2008. Here's the 54 Topps data 1/11/08 vs 1/9/14 (note: the 08 pop reports were before .5 grades and PSA combined the lower grades in "1-2" and "3-4"):

    1954 Topps

    1/11/2008 1/9/2014

    1-2 1963 3902
    3-4 5244 12581
    5 8920 17201
    6 15831 27017
    7 18393 26973
    7Q 816 1168
    8 14052 18057
    8Q 2114 2801
    9 1044 1459
    9Q 111 161
    10 37 82
    Tot 69575 111402

    1982 Topps:

    1/11/2008 1/9/2014

    1-2 105 147
    3-4 108 193
    5 380 621
    6 665 1151
    7 3241 4728
    7Q 63 86
    8 16417 21423
    8Q 1244 1378
    9 12236 20310
    9Q 957 1381
    10 1813 9262
    Total 37239 60680
Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all "right-thinking" people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

This is known as “bad luck.”

That is a staggering percentage jump of PSA 10's compared to PSA 9's over a six year period. I am sure the reasons are myriad.

Since many commons (and even some stars) are worth relatively little if you don't get a PSA 10 from this era, I wonder how many submitters request a MG 10 when sending in cards from these years.

My suggestion to copy/paste the pop report was to track the number of submissions. Measuring the true supply is a completely different matter.

Is anyone willing to share their information on high profile cards? Either Mantle, or Jordan, or Magic/Bird, or any HOF RC etc. I am just curious to analyze them and see what I can discern from it.
    Thanks!
