Dr J and Steve Young Meeting and Autograph session

Guys, Lots of reading by me, but few posts. I am looking for a little help. I will be meeting Dr. J & Steve Young at a private function, that includes a signing. Basically, I can bring what i want and they will sign. I am wondering what is the best item. I get that it depends on what you collect.

Is the Bird Magic rookie a decent one to start out getting Dr J? Are Bird and Magic tougher to get?

All help and ideas are appreciated.

Thanks
john

Of those on the card (Erving/Bird/Johnson), I think Erving is the hardest of the three as the other two do private signings here and there. If you don't go that route, I'd probably get a 16x20 photo.

Magic is definitely the easiest...he puts himself out there all the time. I don't see much from Bird or Erving.

I've always been partial to basketballs and footballs signed more than anything, but they are cumbersome.

If you are confident about getting the Bird and Magic too that would be amazing. I have a Bird/Magic RC signed by all 3 but had to pay a pretty penny for it. Might be my favorite item

  • My dad loves Dr. J. So a couple of years ago I found out he was doing a signing and I showed up with a basketball and silver sharpie. It turned out great and my dad proudly displays it in his home. Can't go wrong with a basketball and silver sharpie. I think it would be even better, though, if you found an ABA ball and had him sign that.
  • Steve Young 's 1984 Topps USFL or his 1986 Topps would be nice to get signed .
  • '84 usfl steve young is THE card. bird has a signing coming up in march and magic is the easiest so getting that '80 topps signed could be done within the next 4-5 mos i think if you get erving now. i just need bird on mine and will be sending it in march.
  • Dr J has some real classic 70's basketball cards. I'd get him on one of those that you can find in nice shape. Maybe crack out a PSA 8.

I'd get Young on either 84 USFL or 86 Topps.

    Packerjohn,
FYI if you are getting Dr.J to sign at an event outside of a sit down signing I would recommend that when you politely ask him for an autograph to address him as Mr.Erving. I know that he will often only sign "Dr.J" if you address him that way. There is obviously no guarantee that he will sign "Julius Erving" but you have better odds that he will sign is full signature if you don't refer to him as Dr.J when you ask him for a signature. Obviously, saying "please" and "thank you" will also go a long way anytime you are asking for an autograph.

+1 from jswieton. I have found jswieton to be a wealth of "live / private" signing knowledge....recommend taking his advice on this one.
