National Conondrum

Starting to plan for the 2014 national and my wife (we were just married in September) has shown interest in attending the show with me. While I find this to be an admirable quality that she has shown interest in one of my hobbies, I don't know if its a good idea for her to see how much money I may drop in cards and unopened product! Maybe I should test the waters now and see how much money she may "let me" spend?
Any thoughts from the married folk on this??
This post is somewhat in good humor, and actually, its pretty cool that she wants to come to the show with me. I've been playing the whole "its an investment" angle with her since we got married and why I had all this money "invested" in cards and unopened boxes prior to our marriage. At least she hasn't asked me to sell it all off and buy furniture or something

I'm married and not scared of my wife.

Looking forward to talking to you again this year in Cleveland.

Collecting:
Any unopened Baseball cello and rack packs and boxes from the 1970's and early 1980s.
<< <i>It is very cool that she wants to go with you. Enjoy it. Don't hide things from your wife. Definitely don't start a marriage off that way. My wife finds what I spend on my collections upsetting at times but she gets over it. She knows I spend good money on her too and I never deny her anything she really wants. Think about years of hiding how much you spend on things & hiding credit card statements/eBay purchases, does that sound like fun? >>
good advice.
on our one-year anniversary (1989) , my wife helped me setup at a card show in Nashville. she was thrilled. LOL. 25 years later, she still lets me buy/sell cards.
Thanks,

The post was somewhat in good humor, but I agree. I admit with getting married and curtailing my spending a bit has been tough. Even explaining to her how much I spent on cards before we dated/got married was not easy for me. I think that now she sees my excitement and joy that I get from collecting, she pretty much understands. I am excited that she wants to come with me, and I think a conversation about spending should be discussed now. Hopefully, I can lobby for a high number...ha ha.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
I knew going in there would be little that fit my collection at the show and I was fine with it and went for other reasons. That being said I would have liked to have spent more time browsing.
Personally I don't collect much outside of wrestling but I love the hobby and love to see all of the awesome cards and you will definitely see some cool things at a show that large.
If you are really on the hunt and plan to go through the dealers inventory I would set aside a day for just you to go and like another board member said make arrangements for her to do something on her own.
She's been very supportive of what I do. She even stayed up till 2 a.m. with me last time I was prepping for a show, putting cards in penny sleeves.
<< <i>Jeremy, my wife has gone to the last two Nationals with me and enjoyed herself. She still thinks we are all geeks, but that doesn't bother me in the least. As Tim said, there really isn't much around the convention center in Cleveland, but at least my wife will have a car to travel around while I'm at the show. She will usually occupy herself during the day and we'll do something at night. Hopefully, we'll be able to see the Indians play this year.

Definitely! Most likely we'll be staying for a few days. I don't know if some of you usually get together for drinks in the evening, but that would be fun to do! Maybe we could even get enough drinks in you, so you'll rip some packs!!!
I work exactly 6.7 miles from the convention site, but live about an hour away. I could provide anyone good places to eat around the area. Shopping I probably can't help much with. But the Indians are in town that week and Cleveland has a casino now as well. Of course both of those are downtown, so little bit of a haul . 15 min maybe - depending on traffic and traffic isn't typically bad in Cleveland at least not compared to other cities I've been too.
I hope you all come for the National.
To the original poster - My wife and I have a monthly budget which includes groceries, the mortgage payment, "going out money" (restaurants, etc) and worked into the budget is "fun money" which in my case usually goes to cards. We've been doing this since 2001 and I have never been questioned in my expenses for baseball cards (just I never question her scrap booking expenses). It works incredibly well.
And by the way, she went with me to the 2002 National in Chicago.
As they say, plenty of good seats still available!
<< <i>Just tell her you're the general and she's just a lowly third class seaman.. >>
Nice!!! Now that's putting her in her place!
Jeremy-
I actually am kind of having the same issue. I'm not so much worried about how much I would spend, because it's my dough and she already knows I would tell her to cram it if she even said anything. I'm more concerned that my g/f will go and frankly just be completely bored off of her you know what. On one hand it's admirable that she wants to go, on the other I'm going to feel guilty because I am afraid that she will want to leave 30 minutes after being there and I know I'll be there all day.
Here's a list of many different things to do.
Here's a few more.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

RyanAdmirer, what does it feel like to be a tough guy?
Maybe for the National, you can have some business cards printed up that contain a discreet message saying that you're with your wife and she can't know what kind of money is being transacted. Maybe the card could also include a 'secret code' system of communicating dollar amounts. For example, you could suggest moving a decimal over ($50=$500)
I'm obviously very bored at work today

That's some sage advice right there. I take it you're mentioned in his will?
you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet
<< <i>Oh man, if my wife had ANY idea how much I buy/sell cards for...........Wow.

Ha ha!! I definitely like the idea of the business cards!

If you want to know why don't you just ask your mother?

Yeah, you could go "by the book", like Lieutenant Saavik, pennies seem like dollars....
Conundrum is the word all right. It could go bad - your wife might think you are spending "too much money". BUT.... It could also go in a very positive way too. Your wife could become impressed by all the great stuff there, and you could explain how obtaining some great (i.e. expensive) items fits into your collection, and even add value to it, and she might even encourage you thus to spend even more on obtaining quality items and creating an impressive collection. That's what happened with me, and my wife isn't even much into collecting.
If anyone was into the movie "A Christmas Story", the family home has been restored to its "original" 40's setting, and is open as a museum - 3159 W. 11th St.
In regards to spending and informing the missus, I keep my wife informed. God forbid if anything happened, she needs to know what I have so as not to be taken advantage of during liquidation. Morbid I know, but a necessary evil.
