Gehrig

I met a man the other night who was at the game when Gehrig gave his speech. He said his brother (a professional songwriter-wrote the score for Meet Me in St. Louis) once played the piano for DiMaggio at a celebrity gathering in the late 30s . The lady who was supposed to play refused because it was beneath her dignity to play for a ball player. Supposedly the brother asked Joe whether he was a bass or a tenor-Joe said “I’m a center fielder.” I hope that’s a true story.

    Speech was 75 years ago.

I met a man recently that said he was the Nephew of Charlie Parker (Jazz Great). Even looked a bit like him.

Googled Parker that night and found that he had no siblings.

Aren't you the cynic? The man telling the story is 90. He somtimes travelled to New York to visit his brother (who was ten years older). I do not see how Charlie Parker having no siblings relates to this story.

Can you say what the man's last name was? Did he tell you?

The older brother was Hugh Martin; the younger one is Gordon. I have know for years that Hugh Martin had a brother in Birmingham.

Hugh Martin did write music for Meet Me in St Louis and lived to be 95. I tend to believe the story... while it may not have happened exactly as told, a ninety year old man is not just going to make this up
