Thoughts on this 1975 Yount?

I recently submitted this to PSA and it came back as an 8. I was hoping for more. Centering looks perfect and it has sharp corners and edges all around. Surface is great. The only spot that I could see being a flaw is the bottom edge. It's a tad "rougher" than the other 3.

Opinions on if folks think it's worth resubmitting to try for that 8.5

Thanks,
Ryan

Chipping along the bottom edge is the likely reason it didn't grade higher. I could certainly see this card in an 8.5 holder, though. How is back centered?

Either way, that is a sharp looking card. image

one of the best Yount I have seen
  • Here's a photo of the back. Not great centering, but within the range of 9, i would think.

Definitely within range. I would crack and resub this one. The upside is worth it.

  • Do you think it's worth cracking or should I do a review in case? I've had success with both methods. I used one of my free CC submissions for this one. I wonder if I should pay for a higher service level.

    Thanks for the opinions.

You could try to review route at first. I have had some success with that option also, but I believe PSA is more conservative when reviewing star cards. I don't believe there's any evidence to suggest that paying for a higher service level improves your results, just that you will get your cards back quicker.

Is it in the new holder?

I would crack and resubmit. From the picture, it looks too nice to only be an 8, unless there is a surface issue.

  • Yes it is in a new holder nhlfightguy.

As for the card itself, it wouldn't look out of place at all in an 8.5 holder.

Looks like you got a tough grader on that one, unless there's something I can't see from the pic
It may be borderline but I think it could easily be a 9 with a different grader
I wouldn't hesitate cracking and subbing until I got the 9

    uhhhhh
  • I'd be satisfied with the PSA 8.

Bottom left corner (bottom right when viewing the back).
  • I wasn't shocked with the 8 knowing how tough the graders are on 75s. That said, this one is much, much nicer than my other Yount PSA 8 and other 75s I own graded 8. Here's a better scan of the front of the card.

Beauty! PSA just kills '75s. Any card from mid 60' to mid 70's with WHITE borders all around that looks like that get a 9 or 10.

  • Yep. Pretty frustrating to see a card like this come back in an 8 holder. Based on the feedback from everyone, it sounds like I would have a decent shot at an 8.5 at least. I'm going to send it in for review (not cracking it out) first to see if I can get the bump. Will be sure to update this thread when I know.

Agree with this. Wish the one I used to have looked as good this particular "8" image

Very nice Yount. I agree that the lower left corner is the culprit but I've seen worse on 9s. It's worth a resub. Definitely should be at least an 8.5 but then we all know how subjective the granting of half grades are.
  • Funny thing is on this sub I had an 78 8.5 molitor rc come back that I had cracked out. I guess they could only give me one on this order. image

  • I wouldn't be satisfied with an 8 at all on that card. Great looking card. Is the lower left corner due to the picture. Either way minor. Should def get a bump up. And worth it monetarily.

I would absolutely send it back at least twice more if it doesn't bump on the next try. It's a very solid 8.5. I'm torn about whether or not you should submit in the holder, since the card is freshly graded. Still, I guess I'd give that one shot, then move on to cracking. Good luck!

  • Grade just popped on my review. I kept the card in the previous holder and sure enough, it landed in an 8.5 this time. I feel much better about this one now, but I'm a little disappointed that I had to "pay twice" to get that grade. Thanks to everyone on the thread who gave their opinions and encouraged me to send it in. Unfortunately it was a no go getting the other 2 cards bumped image

Here's card in it's new holder. How much better does this look with the 8.5 label?

That is a nice card, but top left corner and T/B centering likely prevent it from grading any higher.
