What was your best pick up of 2013?

This year I have picked up some pretty neat stuff that I am very proud to have in my collection but out of everything, it would have to be a tie between these 2 cards.

So what has everyone else gotten? Doesnt have to be the most expensive thing either. I just want to see some cool cards that otherwise we would never have gotten to see and at the same time, we get to see what everyone's collecting interest are.

    Awesome cards guys!

I have added some nice things to my collection this year and definitely stepped in a few pot holes too.

This card is at PSA now and I am hoping it does well. I only have two copies of it and I would rank it easily in my top five favorite cards.

Here's my top 3 for "best cards I didn't plan on getting, but I ended up getting them anyways, and I'm glad I did"...

First card is from the E90-1 American Caramels "set", Addie Joss:

I've kind of moved away from cards for the most part (except for selling them image ) but I do have a couple of favorite collecting pickups of 2013.

I've been working on the US Presidential run of autographs, and these two were my favorite adds of 2013:

    Abraham Lincoln check

    image

    and

next up is my oldest and best autograph. I was pretty excited to pick this one up. Beautiful shape for a Washington.

Signature “G:º Washington” on the lower portion cut from an ornately bordered Mountain Road Lottery ticket with the printed date “1768”, 3.75” x 0.75”. On laid paper. Lightly foxed. Fine condition.

The Mountain Road Lottery was a fund raising project conceived in 1767 by George Washington and others to finance the building of a road through the Allegheny Mountains in Virginia, and construct a resort in the Hot Springs and Warms Springs of Augusta County, which were reputed to have healing properties. Washington acted as manager of the lottery. 85% of the proceeds would be paid out in prizes; the remaining 15% would be kept for the Mountain Road project. Each lottery ticket cost £1. As there were other lotteries being run at the time, Washington’s lottery was not a success. In 1769, King George III banned all lotteries in the American colonies. The Mountain Road was built in 1772, however, when the Virginia legislature voted a sum of £300 pounds for the purpose of “clearing a safe and good road from the Warm Springs in Augusta County to Jennings Gap.”

I completed my set of autographs of all living Bruins with their numbers retired. I had Cam Neely's from a Bruins wives carnival in 1990; picked up John Bucyk at a silent auction at a golf tournament and got Milt Schmidt at a local card show. This year, I got Phil Esposito's at a Lightning-Bruins game in Tampa in February, Terry O'Reilly at the Providence Bruins pre-season fan fest and Ray Bourque's at the Shriner's show in Wilmington MA. The coup de grace was standing in line for 3.5 hours to get Bobby Orr's signature at a book signing in Newton MA.

Very nice thread. Thanks for starting it. Cool to see everyone's interests. Some really great card and non-card pickups. It was a big return to collecting for me in 2013. I made a nice run on unopened products but my favorite cards of the year came down to these three. I just got the Baylor in the mail on 12/30/13 so it was my last pick up of the year. Excited to have made great progress on my 61 set this year including picking up 3 of the big 4 RC's. So here are my 3 best pick ups of the year. One of my 2014 goals will be to add the Wilt PSA 7 to fill the hole in this picture and my set.

I've scored a lot of cool wacky packages this year, but I think this one is my favorite pick up just because of how hard it is to find a nice example.
I passed up at least a half dozen other 8's due to being tilted, diamond cut or toned. This one is not perfectly centered, but for this title it's about as good as it gets, and nice and white!

While this isn't sports memorabilia, I'd also give my vote to this as the best pick up. Those are truly historic pieces. The rest of us are just buying pictures of jocks on cardboard. If memory serves, I think I saw that GW lottery ticket on an episode of Pawn Stars once. >>

Thanks, yes, there was one of these lottery tickets on Pawn Stars as well. If you like those, I have a thread in the autograph forum with my Presidents

There is hardly any activity on the graph forum, so would be nice to start ramping it up some with some good autograph threads

All 3 came in the last 4 weeks, with the Gibson arriving yesterday.

I know the pink Gibson can be a little polarizing but I'm in the love it camp for two reasons, the irony of one of the most dominant pitchers surrounded by pink, and I really like the non-yellow 59s, whether it's the blue Elston Howard, the green Duke, the black F. Robby, or yes, the pink Gibson.

I picked up a personal White Whale this year ('50 R423 Bill Dickey PSA 10), a real White Whale (from 2013 Topps Triple Threads Baseball), a quarter of a pre-WWII European set for which the best checklist I know of is 80% complete [and I've done the work to get it that far], and a bunch of other stuff I find really cool even if most other people think I'm weird for it, but I have to go with some things from one of my last maildays of the year.

    image
    image

The Brazil cards are from the 1970 Panini World Cup set. That team is considered by many to be the greatest team in international football (soccer) history.

I plan on submitting several to PSA at some point. I think I'm looking at some nice grades.

    My best pickup of 2013:

    image
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Love the 1961 Fleer BKB. If I ever did a basketball set, that would be the one. The poor centering, coupled with my being anal retentive about centering, means I probably won't attempt it... at least not until after I finish my well centered 1961 Fleer FB set.... so, yeah, never. image

This is a hard question to answer because I literally bought everything in my collection in 2013. I hadn't collected since childhood so I was starting from scratch. I'll give my top three non-card and my top three graded cards. They'll all be Bo Jackson of course as he's my primary collecting focus.

    Non-Card

Bo Jackson's Senior Year High School Yearbook
Some people might not appreciate this as much as I do, because of the fact they were cut from the book. I'm not too worried about that because this is the way I prefer them personally. Some of the pictures have a classic look and depict Bo in his up and coming years. Here are three of my favorites.
    imageimageimage

Bo Jackson - Topps Original Negatives 1987
I love these because they are original negatives that were not used to make a card. Anyone can have a graded card if they have the money, patience and dedication to search them out or submit them. I like these because they are a unique addition to my set, and mine alone. Also, the negatives are unusual and interesting to me.
    imageimage

Bo Jackson - Topps Original Match Print Photographs
These are original photographs used by the printer to ensure the color of the final product was correct. The cards are, however, not even close in the clarity and rich color of these prints. They are quite a bit larger than the cards as well.
    imageimageimage

    Card

1989 Topps Heads Up Test #8 Bo Jackson EX 5
This is a difficult card to find, information about the release is limited. One account I've read says they were issued to only two stores in PA for the test. I know the whereabouts of a few currently that aren't for sale. I'd like a better example, of course but this will do finely for now. It's a bit strange but so am I. This is my favorite card pickup of 2013. It's encased in an enormous holder!
    imageimage

1988 Ace Fact Pack Los Angeles Raiders #NNO Bo Jackson MT 9
Another tough card to find, expensive when you do find it. I'm pretty happy with this example. The L/R centering seems to be the only thing preventing it from a better grade. I have more of these in the mail on the way to my house as we speak, perhaps I'll find a GEM after all...
    image

1991 Topps Desert Shield #600 Bo Jackson GEM MT 10
I've always liked collectibles related to the military as my late Father served in both the Air Force and the Navy. When I heard about this card I knew I needed to have one. I had purchased several raw copies and a MT 9 graded example before finding this at auction, brought her home. I learned later that my college roommate who was in service at the time these cards were issued actually has some he personally brought home. Happy to have this card in my collection.
    image

Thanks to the others who posted on this thread. I enjoyed looking at some of your favorites.

I crossed off some hard to find cards from my checklist but I think the best is this Man O War ticket. He is widely considered the greatest race horse of all time. I've been using the Kentucky derby ticket as the "rookie". Man O War didn't run in the derby but did run in the 1920 Preakness but I have never seen a 1920 Preakness ticket for sale so this is a great option. Also sir Barton is tge first triple crown winner so it's great to have something representing him too
