Boston area members: any neat card shops around?

I am about to be in Boston for the first time, and as one of the premier baseball towns in America, I thought there might be a good card shop in town. Any tips?

Here are some pics from my store 20 miles west of Boston.
Sorry though, I closed it in 1997

I wish I had a card shop that looked like that in my area. That Rickey Henderson in picture #1 looks amazing at a distance, you wouldn't happen to still have possession of it would you? 😉 That 1975 topps set for 850 looked nice too.

I wish I had that stuff still!

Check out all the Marino rookies in pic 1 on the bottom right. Think I had around 50 of them!

Ohhh yeah wow very nice. At a distance every card on the top page of that 1980 set looks very centered and mint, which isn't easy. Do you ever wonder what became of some of your inventory or bssically was it out of sight out of mind? A set like the 1980 or that nice 1975, I would want to make sure it went to a good home, someone that would appreciate it especially if you really put a lot of time and effort into building a gorgeous set like that.

Didn't matter who it was, everything had a price. I bought to sell. I was buying from walk in customers all the time. I didn't put sets like that together.
I probably bought those from customers.
I think back at some of the stuff I bought and some of the deals I didn't agree on. Man, wish we could go back in time.

  • This might be sacrilegious but forget about sports cards. Go to the North End and get a great meal of home made pasta. And don't forget to stop at Mike's Pastry for the best cannoli you will ever have!!!

I was in there a couple times when I was a young kid. They have a lot. They have lots of connections for things.

Once I opened my store, I didn't get out much at all.
At 1 point I had 6 people working for me but was so busy I never got out unless I was going to any of the bigger shows in Ma,Ct,NY,Nationals etc while the help ran the store.
The only other times I got away was when I took my trips to Canada for all my OPC stuff image
Think I spent more money at the strip joints than on cards though image

I think back on those days all the time and miss it.

There was so much more not even pictured. I had a 2400 sq. foot store.
Behind the wall of wax in the picture were more shelving units filled with 5000 count boxes

The one in Billerica is long gone, probably close to 10 years now. Slapshot is on Route One in Saugus, it isn't the biggest place, but Mark does have some nice stuff.

    Edit: Link to Slapshot... Slapshot

Edit (2): Do not get Slapshot confused with Sportsworld, also on Route One in Saugus.

The "South Shore" area of Boston used to have scores of card stores. Very few are still open -- J & J Sportscards in North Attleboro is one of just a couple that haven't shut down.

The pictures of the card store above are really cool. Boy, I miss those days!

  • saugus=route 1,if that is what you mean.too bad about billerica,i moved to nh 15 years ago.

I echo Steve here, Slapshot is a great little shop. I have known Mark for years and he does carry a real nice selection of it all

I happened to go by there yesterday and picked up a couple items

  • If your in town during a Mansfield Card show those are always good.

Doug brings in a lot of Bruins, Pats, Sox, Celts past players at very reasonable prices. Show always draws well and has a lot of dealers at it.
  • Wow, that is an incredibly centered 53 Mantle. Talk about eye appeal.

Teaparty (or is it called Kenmore Sportscards or something like that) is still open in Kenmore Square near Fenway Park I believe, and is the best (only?) shop in Boston itself these days. There's not a ton of stuff there, but it's your best bet within Boston now.

My thought exactly! Crappy iphone pic does it no justice. Not quite in my collecting alley but I couldnt resist

I think JJ Teaparty is still there on Bromfield Street, off the Freedom Trail. And there is another card shop at the end of that block. It's also a few steps away from Beantown Pub, which usually has a few of the unique Sam Adams brews on tap.

Forget Mike's Pastry. Overrated and too crowded with out of town tourists. Go to Modern Pastry on Hanover Street.
