Going to look at a vintage collection(hopefully this one is good)

I'm sure all of you guys have been bummed by going and looking at "vintage" collections and all of the cards turn out to be 80's and 90's junk. I have done that several times but this one might actually be promising. I'm going to look at a collection either today or tomorrow of what is supposed to be a few hundred thousand cards. The cards belong to a friend of my wife's family that I have known for over ten years but never had any clue that he had cards. The man that owns them is close to 80 years old and moved to Oklahoma from California around 1979. When he was in California he owned a gas station that he also had a card shop in. He inherited the station when he was around 25 years old(around 1958) and had already began collecting before that but stopped around 1979 when he moved to OK. There was some mention of sealed boxes(I have no hopes for this as it sounds way to good to be true). He thought that it is atleast 50% baseball with the rest being Basketball, Football, Hockey, and Wrestling. Now, here is the tricky part. The collection isn't necessarily up for sale but he obviously knows I am interested in acquiring it since I am going to look through it. I will let you guys know how it turns out........I'm doing a good job of masking my excitement but I am actually like a little kid inside.

    holy potential

Potential is huge but I have to stay calm about it. I also didn't mention that the guy doesn't have any sons. He does have a daughter but she is unmarried and lives at home to help take care of them. That is also part of why I'm getting to go look at the collection is because he gets around pretty good but his wife is starting to have health problems. They are going to be moving into an assisted living home sometime this year.

If it turns out to be what you hope it is and if you can't afford to buy that much, I wonder if BBCE would be willing to give you a finders fee if they end up buying it. Either way, good luck!

They probably would if it was something that was a huge find. I have a pretty good stash ready to go if I need to to take a big stab at it. I just don't really know what to expect overall on what he would ask or anything.

  • Wow, this one does sound like it has huge potential. Unopened boxes? Yowzers......at 80, this puts the guy in his 50's during the boom. It would be hard to imagine he doesn't know what he has. Good luck and if there is any 57 or 61 basketball, I'm interested!

I definitely think that he knows what he has to some extent. I don't want to rip him off but I also want to make some money off of the deal if I am able to buy it.

I am going to try and snap some pictures. I'm just hoping that it is all in really nice condition. Supposedly everything has been boxed up and taped shut, pretty much undisturbed for about 30 years. It will at the least be cool to be the first person to open the boxes and look through everything in a long time.

  • << <i>Any updates? >>

Yes, I was just getting on here this morning to give an update. It was in fact a disappointing trip again. He did have a card shop and moved to OK in 1979 BUT he moved back to CA in the late 80's and had a shop in Anaheim until around 1996. So most of the stuff was late 80's through mid 90's. There were a few vintage cards with the best being a 59 Topps Bob Gibson RC. There were 5 huge plastic totes completely full of sets, singles, unopened boxes....etc. I have so far found 2 93 SP BB sets, 2 94 SP BB sets(1 Die Cut), 2 90 Leaf Sets, 1 92 Bowman set, 1 93 Finest set......stuff like that.

I did however buy all of it because I saw enough to be able to make some money and thought it would be fun to go through. There are several items that I have came across that I have no idea of value. There is a near case(roughly 30-40) of highland mint bronze coins still in the boxes and also 10-20 highland mint bronze cards. There are a ton of magazines, becketts, pictures...etc that are not worth much at all.

The totes were organized by sport- 1 Baseball, 1 Football, 1 Basketball, 1 Hockey, 1 non sport with some Nascar in it. I have just started on the cards and have a long ways to go. I do have a question though, does anybody know of the more rare promo/prototype cards from 89-95? There was a two row box completely full of that kind of stuff and haven't messed with them much in the past.

I don't have many pictures right now but I will definitely get some. I will load a few on here of the totes and a few of the boxes. If I had to guess there are 300,00-500,000 cards, hundreds of magazines...etc. So it is a huge quantity of stuff.

I think I actually saw some. Will keep you in mind when I go through it.
  • Looking through the sets I found 2- 94 Topps Archives(haven't looked to see if the SP's are in there), 1- 95 Bowman's Best, 1- 94 SP Holoview Set.
  • Sorry it wasn't what you hoped for. I was hoping for you.
Although sounds like fine going thru what you got

I appreciate it, its alot of fun just going through all of this stuff. I ended up giving $800 for the collection so its not like it cost much for the quantity that was in there. I just found a 75 Topps George Brett RC and a 59 Topps Musial so there is some decent stuff in it.

If any of the coins are the .999 silver, you got something there too!

I'm sure there's 800 bucks worth of entertainment in there?

What condition was the Brett RC?

I checked them all and they are all Bronze. Its kind of weird though because they are almost all of Ripken Jr, Marino, and Frank Thomas.

I think it would grade around a 6 or 7. Nothing to write home about that is for sure.
  • That's def worth $800 of fun. That's a can't lose deal
  • Looks like a lot of fun for 800 bucks .

This stuff put the junk in junk wax
  • Fire engines and Norman Rockwell in the same picture! You definitely got a good deal and can probably piece out a lot of it. Of course, you could take whatever you don't want and sell that as a group as well if you want someone to take quantity instead.

There are a ton of Norman Rockwell and Fire Engine singles that are Prism cards(I have no idea of their value yet) but they were all put into toploaders and were seperated so i'm guessing they were tough pulls when they came out.

  • Great thing about ebay, you can quickly find out if those sell. If you run into any Byron Scott stuff or have questions on basketball stuff, let me know.
