Help/knowledge regarding ripping 1981 rack box..worth it?

I bought a 1981 full rack box from a dealer, absolutely not one star, medium or minor star showing. Suspicious? Who knows. No need to name the dealer although you guys know him. That's no big deal. Of course not bbce.

My question...are they worth opening? For those who know the sequencing if there is sequencing. I'm not asking for the magic formula. Just is it worth opening...Fernando rookie etc, without ANY stars showing? Can I still get a Fernando rookie,or should I just save it? There are 24 packs.
Prob will just for the fun of it.

Thanks.

Will it be fun to rip? Absolutely! Will it be worth it meaning you'll recoup your investment? Probably not.

But you never know. I pulled a PSA 10 Raines RC out of a pack recently. But, man, PSA is stingy with the 10s when it comes to 1981. And even low pop 10s don't command all that much.

  • Do not worry too much. I bpought a sealed rack case of 1986 one time and no major stars on the front of packs in 6 boxes. Best was Pete Rose and Wade Boggs.

  • Jason,
So can be normal none out of 24 racks. X3 front x3 back? I'm not worried.
Def not expecting to recoup my money. What would be worth it in a 10? The two rookies, Ryan, Seaver? All else's after fees? Dont have a vcp membership but I'd prob only submit a Fernando.

Yes, no stars or semi's showing is possible and not uncommon.

A 10 Fernando will get you the mother lode for 81s. Otherwise, as mentioned, 10s from a low vol submitter are difficult to land. Good luck. Post some scans of what you pull.

A bunch of the stars in 10s could be real windfalls - Bench, Ryan, Rose, Reggie.

I think there probably some gem Kirk Gibsons out there. But not sure about Fernando.

I recall a PSA 10 Gibby selling for 2K not long ago. Most cards will barely justify grading fee even in PSA 10, but if you get one of the few that do, the sky's the limit! I could see a Fernando PSA 10 commanding 4K.

Grote knowing how hard the Fernando is to find without PD and centering issues, I would think the card is a five figure card. Many collectors are looking for that first PSA 10 and I would think that a huge bidding war would happen.

  • It depends how much you paid for the box.

If you get the right bidders with deep pockets, you're probably right, it's possible, but 5 figures for a 1981 card? That is insane, LOL...there are still thousands of Fernandos hiding in unopened cases out there and fewer than 1K have been submitted. You've also got to believe that at least a couple of the 153 PSA 9s could bump to a 10 on any given day.

    Agreed.

The Rose continues to be a high $$$ item in a 10 as well.

Good luck and post scans of your pulls.

  • A little update....nice cards, little off center but most centered ok.

Buuuut the Fernando was one of the worst off center and "diamond cut?" (where it's like a trapezoid/parellelogram or whatever?) of all of them.
    Bringing back lots of memories.
1/3 thru. Any chance of another Fernando?

    1954 and grote...thx as usual
