In general it seems that OPC's are undervalued compared to Topps, even though less were produced.

That's why DEMAND is so much more important than supply!

  • The '79 Topps Stargell is an extremely tough card in high grade. The card is plagued with print streaks and many are off center.

More Topps collectors than OPC collectors.
Yeah, I uploaded that KC icon in 2001
  • All things considered someone basically got the same card for 2 grand less lol.

Not a good example at all and its NOT the same card.

For every example like this, I can show you a case that a opc card sold for much more than a Topps version.

The 1979 Stargell opc is a pop 1 in PSA 10. I did not research the final price but if it did sell at the price of $102.50, I think the buyer got a great deal.
The opc version has had 56 Stargells graded with just the 1 PSA 10.
The 1979 OPC registry set only has 2 people working on it that are over 50% which plays a BIG part.

The 1979 Topps Stargell has 174 graded with also just 1 PSA 10.

However, there are 11 registry set owners over 50% and 8 of them are over 90% and all at a GPA of 9.00 or higher.

This is why the Topps sold so high

  • Obviously the bottom line is Supply vs Demand

In more detail it's Volume vs Percentage

    Topps #55: 174 Total Graded (1 PSA 10/23 PSA 9) 13.8% attain a Mint or better grade(Less than 1% Gem Mint)
    Topps #22: 56 Total Graded (1 PSA 10/15 PSA 9) 44.6% attain a Mint or better grade(1.7% Gem Mint)

One could estimate that it will stay the same percentage over time as there are enough graded to conclude that. Include the fact that there are more Topps registry collectors and the price difference can be more easily understood.

The 79 Topps Stargell card is a beast~one of the toughest cards in the set to find in PSA 9 or better grade..

OTOH, for an opposite example, a PSA 9 or 10 1975 OPC George Brett Roookie would command a premium over the Topps version.

There are many factors to consider, including supply and demand, but each card has its own variables, so it's not as simple as just looking at one example and declaring that OPC is much less valuable than Topps.

The 1979 OPC Stargell PSA 10 was mine. I picked it up raw at the Shriners Boston show loose in a dollar bin.

No complaints here as it didnt fit my collection but the buyer definitely got a great deal on a sweet card
