Is it likely that the Washington, DC Mercantile Bank obsolete remainders were also produced using the ink wiping technique mentioned by sellitstore?
Based on the Heritage archives (which lists 17 notes across all three denominations - $1, $2, $5), it's evident that the blending of more than 1 color on the same plate does not show consistent results. See the last two $1 notes sold through Heritage below. Observe that the red ink extends through the plate letter in Example 2.
