eBay buyer opens case on $.99 item

Received a message from eBay saying a buyer had opened a case against me. He had bought 40 raw cards from a recent auction totaling $82. So he is unhappy with one the cards, one he paid $.99 for and opens a case. I thought a buyer was supposed to contact the seller before a case was opened, not this time. The other issue is Paypal froze the entire $82 for a 99 cent card. So my biggest question is, why would the guy take the time to sit down and open a case with eBay over $.99 and not just write me first? My next question is why would anyone even bother?
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.

Once this is settled I'd appreciate an Ebay ID for the BBL. It all defies logic and reason especially if he is happy with the other 39!!

Unfortunately, buyers on ebay don't have to do anything they don't want to. Such as contact you before opening a case, leaving a neg, or even paying. I argued a neg I received by saying I have spotless feedback and a 14 day return policy. I stated that the buyer never attempted to contact me, if he had, I would have made him whole. The rep told me that it was the buyer's opinion and danced around my other questions. Later that day I received a questionnaire from ebay asking me about my experience with CS.

I tried to contact a seller (or so I thought) and it opened a case.. I was not intending that to happen, I felt bad about it
it pissed off the seller but it all worked out in the end

I don't know if it happens all the time but at times I have had buyers with a concern click on contact seller, then choose the topic (in most cases for me its item not received, despite it being less than a week since item was mailed) and it immediately opens a page that opens a case rather than lets the buyer send a message. It usually ends in an apology from the buyer.
  • Do a partial refund to close the case. You just can't make sense out of stupid
    It never leaves you...

$0.99 is petty, agreed. Why not just give this guy a few pennies and be done?

  • I would just give him his dollar back, and let it go.
  • I did give him his dollar back, just wanted to vent on the way he went about getting it though. He did contact me later and said he didn't want to open a case but eBay did it automatically which goes along with what some others said. Guess I would expect nothing less from eBay.

I had that happen as well one time. I tried to contact a seller as one item was mistakenly left out of a group of cards I bought. eBay communications made me open a case. The seller forwarded the card, I closed the case, the seller got his money.

I think eBay tries to limit and regulate all communication to try to prevent any off eBay deals made through their storefront.

I almost opened a case by mistake by clicking on the contact seller and then clicking on the item not as described. But it clearly stated that if I continued I would be opening a
case against the seller and that wasn't what I wanted. So I started over and clicked on contact seller and then clicked on other. That allowed me to send an e-mail to the seller and
we worked things out between us.

Ebay is batty as hell now. I won a 15 dollar item on ebay. It was an SD card reader. I knew he was reselling smashed box and returns.mine arrived DOA. I tried to send him an email and just ask for another one. Nope, just like the previous poster, I somehow opened a case against him. I felt terrible but he made it right with me.

As a seller, this also just happened to me. Once he received a replacement I asked him to close the case and he didn't know what I was talking about and was adamant he didn't open one and just used the contact seller link.

Easiest and best way to contact a seller or buyer is through Paypal if it is used in the transaction. You get the email address in full on the confirmation of payment. Once the item is paid for all contact between the parties can be off of ebay assuming it is someone you want continue to do business with.

I think his point is just how stupid ebay is designed to work, or how petty people have become. I agree, I buy lots of items from sellers, and once I do, I scan their stock to take advantage of combined shipping. So I often end up with 10-15 cards, and not all come in the way I think they should. This whole thing is subjective and communication is the best way to handle it, without the ebay system of opening a case and making a big deal out of it. Good luck and Merry Christmas to all!

well the title seems like a slam of the buyer. we have learned that there is a good chance that he didn't think he was opening a claim but ebay does it automatically.

i don't get the petty comment. so if you buy something on ebay and don't get it if its under a certain price its petty to wonder where it is or what the condition is?

I received the wrong rack pack just recently and tried to contact the seller, but a case was opened. I didn't think having a case opened was that big of a deal. The seller sent me the correct rack pack and I closed the case, left positive feedback and moved on. Isn't that the way it is supposed to work? Is there any harm done to the seller if a case is opened, but then resolved?

yes there is , paypal will tie up your money and not give you access to it even if you didn't do anything wrong.

say I buy 10 cards for 5 grand from a seller. seller forgets to pack one 20 dollar card. I contact him through ebay and ebay opens a case and puts a hold on the whole 5 grand.

^^^ that's one area where Paypal/eBay come off the tracks. Like a train going 200MPH crashing and killing everyone on board. There's a better way to do it, if they wanted to make the correct changes. As it is Paypal and eBay's whole CSR model is way, way off.
