1990 Toys R Us Mini Ken Griffey Jr

Possibly rare but can't confirm it for sure. Steve Hart said he never heard or seen one. Supposedly these came
on the case box that the boxed sets came in to the Toys R Us stores? The one pictured was sold on Ebay for 10 bucks
and of course I passed thinking they were not that rare and here I sit waiting for another one to show up.
Does anyone have any info or actually owns one they would like to sell to me? It's my most wanted Griffey card and would
love to put this under my tree for Christmas......

Can't confirm but an image cut-off the display box as you have identified as a possibility would pass muster. That hand cut Griffey appears similar to the way the 1990 Hoops wax display box has a smaller David Robinson card image on it that could be hand cut off. The Robinson on the display box has some perforations on parts of it's borders to assist in creating a nice 3d display from folding up the display box top. Not really sure if the hobby would consider it an actual card due to the blank back and lack of printed perforations or lack of perforations that would have led it to be able to be completely separated from the display box. But since u like it, keep an eye out and go for it next time. That's the best I can come up as a guy that doesnt collect unopened.

    Hi John

    Have never seen it before.

Have you ever seen this ad piece? It's on thick magazine stock about 4x9"

No Mike I have never seen that one but I have seen that image of Griffey used before on
    other Nike products..

I wish I knew more about that Toys R Us card and what it was on.. Like I said from what I can remember
it said it was on the shipping box so it was tossed once it was opened?

edit: I misunderstood the sale - you're looking for the actual case that the sets came in.

Yes or soe sort of display piece that has the mini version of any card but would love a Griffey..

On a side note I wonder if they did it in 1991 also for a Frank Thomas?

  • Sets came in a "case" of I believe 24 complete sets. The box they were in were similar to a typical wax box of the era which had pictures of a few cards on the outside of the box. There were a few players featured on the outside of the box and I vaguely remember Greg Jeffries being one of them. I have to believe there are still some full boxes somewhere as these sets weren't very popular and they were produced right in the middle of the mass production era.

I assume so but don't think I have ever seen a full box of any year on eBay which seems odd.
