Jean de Lorraine / Prudence Walking Right
c. 1540-1550

Obverse: Bust of Jean de Lorraine facing right, wearing a biretta and gown. Around, within incised circles, IO · CAR · LOTHORINGIÆ .
Reverse: Personification of Prudence walking to the right with a dragon at her feet. In her left hand is a mirror, and in her right hand is a pair of compasses. Around, within incised circles, SIC · ITVR / AD · ASTRA .

Reverse Inscription:
SIC ITUR AD ASTRA
Thus You Shall Go to the Stars (from the Aeneid)
Earlier attributed to Benvenuto Cellini, it has been more recently attributed to an unidentified Milanese medallist.
Jean de Lorraine (1498-1550) was created cardinal of Sant'Onofrio in 1518 and became archbishop of Lyon in 1537.
