Worst looking highly touted vintage sportscard? 0pinions?

I have to say the Clemente rookie... the in action shot is way better in his second year Topps card.

lets try to keep in mind highly touted!

63 Rose rookie, 65 is my favorite early Rose.

Can't stand 1957 Topps Football big three RC's for some reason. The grotesque Unitas is the worst of the bunch.

I'd go with the Rose. Actually I like the Clemente RC. '58 Brooks Robinson is an awful photo as well.

Good call on the Rose rookie, LC. I like the card, and had to have one, but it is pretty fugly overall.

While I agree the '56 Clemente looks a little bit cooler than the '55 RC, the '55 Clemente is no slouch when it comes to eye appeal. Quite a beautiful card, actually, with the green background...

I'll throw in the '49 Leaf Babe Ruth and, at least in my opinion, the '56 Topps Mantle. Love the action shot on the Mantle, but the portrait looks a little goofy and unlike Mantle, with the huge grin and the over-colored red lips. I want to like that card, I just... can't. image
  • Ryan RC. Multi-player plus very ugly set design.

1957 Topps Brooks Robinson is, to my eye, the ugliest iconic card out there.

Me too, just hard to drop a grand on a decent one that's still fugly. I have the rest of his Topps run + Hostess, Kellogg's, most of the OPC & oddball stuff and just can't pull the trigger on that one.
  • 1990 Topps Frank Thomas. Looks like he's grabbing some guys junk.
  • Thanks guys that was fun!

  • On the Clemente RC I think the in action looks like a 16bit Nintendo video game character, real blocky, looking like its an arcade character... sorry just my opinion... mid grade second year, well centered works for me.

  • I personally don't like the 59 Gibson. It's pink!!!! Plus he's grinning! I prefer my Gibson scowling and backing hitters off the plate. Was surprised to see the 57 Brooks on the list I think he just looks like a kid in it the 58 on the other hand I completely understand.

E90-1 Joe Jackson rookie. Pretty bad drawing which usually makes him look like he has smeared lipstick on his face.

  • I love the 57 football...I like the landscape of the cards more than anything. I love the in actions on the 57 football... Im a big in action horizontal card kinda guy soo the cartoon of the clemente rc disappoints...bc the potential is there. !(56 clemente is one of my favorite period!

I think any rookie card that has two or more people stinks. ie munson's.

you got the year correct, but how about Drysdale's choppers? ugh! image
  • Rose? I don't know. In a way only a mother could love....I like it because it's essentially the only significant card that has that design.

Are any of these players' cards considered 'iconic'?

    Andy Etchebarren
    Willie McGee
    Wally Moon

I agree on the Rose rookie. I'm not sure what qualifies as "highly touted" but the 72 Fisk rookie is also very ugly in my opinion. Especially since such a large percentage of them seem OC and have printing problems, it really makes it unappealing. I couldn't disagree more on the Clemente rookie card though. That is actually one of my favorite all time cards, but to each their own, and that's what makes collecting so fun. Each of our collections has it's own personality.
I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid.

76 topps gem mint 10 commons 9 stars
    Arenado purple refractors(Rockies) Red (Cardinals)
successful deals with Keevan, Grote15, 1954, mbogoman
  • Put Me down for the 63 Rose.

Any multi player rookies are very unappealing to me. Most notebly:

    78 Paul molitor
  • Not necessarily vintage...but the most important card of the best reliever of all-time...and a 1st ballot HOFer....and one of the worst cards I can think of:

I have never looked at this card in that way before, but now that you mention it, I don't think I'll ever be able to look at it the same way again. Hilarious!image

Put me down for the 1963 Rose. It's ironic because that 1963 set is arguably the best looking Topps set ever, but they really dropped the ball on all those Rookie Prospect cards in that set. Just 4 faces kind of floating in the air....part creepy, part silly, and big part ugly. Just go with the 1964 Rose, which is one of the nicest Rose cards out there

    Honorable mention:

1983 Topps Tony Gwynn. A close up of his ass. Tony has gone on record saying he hates that card

Some others for consideration, perhaps not "highly touted":

1961 Mantle - been discussed before - rouged cheeks

    1962 Gaylord Perry - cartoonish

1967 Mantle - drunk tank mug shot

1953 Mays - of all the incredible portraits in the 53 set, this one looks amateurish.

1959 Norm Cash RC - tough to tell who it is

The 1992 Bowman is ugly, yes. But most important? This one is pretty good too:

This one is more even with the Bowman IMO, not up there with the 1990 Diamond:

For ugly highly touted cards, I've always felt that a lot of the 1952 Parkhurst cards looked oddly incomplete when compared with others from the set, due to some having rinks in the background and some not. Here's some relatively unfinished looking Howe and Sawchuck RC's:

compared with some other big cards from the set with a little more to their pictures:

So really, why did they just put Howe, Sawchuck, and so many others in that set on the cards all by themselves? I'm used to the look, but I don't like it that way much.
