OT - Video Game System Help Please

Just got this email from my wife. Since I don't play video games I am hoping maybe some of you can help me out. I do have a table top Pac Man machine in my living room but that's the extent of my knowledge. image

"Researching the pros/cons of Xbox 360, Xbox one and PS4. So confusing! Leaning towards Xbox 360. Thoughts?"

Our son is about to turn 11 and likes video games. He is big into Minecraft most notably. Not into sports really. We don't like him to play bloody shooting games, beyond whatever he does in Minecraft, though I am sure he will in the next couple years.

Our daughter is 9 and not really into video games.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would go with PS4 personally. I like the system and games more than that of Xbox. I would stay away from xbox 360 since the xbox one just came out. They will stop making games for xbox 360 soon and your son wont be able to get new games. Same goes for the PS3.

  • Agree, ps4. It's on my list but I'm enjoying gta5 on the ps3 at the moment. As soon as more games are released, I'll be getting the ps4. I've seen a bunch of the xbox ones have a problem when inserting a disc it makes a nasty crunching sound. Might just be a flaw that will eventually get fixed by Microsoft. And I'm not sure about the ps4, but the sony network on the ps3 is free, compared to Microsoft charging for their online play.

My wife reminded me that our son always asks about the Kinect system. Do the others have a good option like this?

I would recommend the PS4. The PS4 has better performance than the Xbone and, personally, I strongly prefer the exclusive titles on Sony's platform to those on the Xbox platform.

A huge factor, though, is: what system are his friends getting? If he's going to play online at all, he's going to want to do that with his friends.

FWIW, nothing wrong with getting a 360 or PS3 now. They are a tremendous value, have HUGE libraries of great games, and will continue to receive new games at least through 2015.

The Kinect is exclusive to the 360 & XBone. The Playstation has its Camera/Eye combo but it's nowhere near as good and has nowhere near the support. The Kinect is not very useful for gaming but I've read/heard that using the connect for navigating the system itself is pretty darn great on the Xbone. That's once you get past the fact you have say complete game titles ("Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag" instead of just "Assassin's Creed") anyway.
  • ps4 it has everything you need and would want
  • I'm not sure if I would invest in a PS4 right now. You may have a hard time finding one but its your choice if you want to shell out the money.

We have a PS3 and love it .. we use it to watch movies , netflix for free and I play games here and there.
Also have an XBOX 360 with the kinect its very cool but allot of the online content requires the membership fee. Dont really use it because the controllers require batteries. PS3 they charge via USB cable.

PS3 will be a reasonable price and for at least a year or two will continue to release games.

When and if our PS3 dies I might purchase a PS4 if the craze has gone down and I can just walk in and buy one. Otherwise I wouldn't mind just getting another PS3.

If you ever want to use it to get exercise for your kids, then the xbox one is probably better. I think you are in No Cal, so that probably isn't necessary, but it's something to consider for any parent trying to sneak in a little extra activity. For gaming, the differences are minimal between xbox one and PS4 in the end. I think it's big that the playstation online services are free as opposed to the xbox that charges for the gold memberships. If it matters, I don't think minecraft is on any of the new systems yet. It's on the xbox 360, but as others have mentioned, that system is phasing out. The 11 year old would be fine with an xbox 360 but only for so long. The newer systems are definitely the cooler gift as well.

To tie this in to the board, I should bring up that I just picked up another 1982 Donkey Kong Wax Box. Kudos on the pacman table.

You may want to consider a PS3 first at the lower price to see if he likes it. His friends will likely have the PS3 or XBox but the benefit is always going to be the free on-line play. If you think he will be disappointed with the lesser system then get the PS4. It'll be tough to find in stock but you can buy them on eBay for a premium.

Normally I would say PS4, but since you have small kids you should go xbox. There are a bunch of PG games with the Kinect (a few dance games for your daughter too if she's interested). I don't know if I would care too much about the online capabilities of either system at their ages. The Xbox will definitely have better game selections for young kids and they'll love the Kinect.

Also, if your son is asking about the Kinect system, he definitely wants an xbox. Either the xbox one or 360 are safe bets. If you can find the xbox one that'll definitely earn you dad of the year honors from an 11 year old boy image

  • I meant the PS3 was free online, until they turn it off, at least. You also may want to consider getting him a PC for gaming.

How do you get Netflix for free on the PS3?

I still have to pay for the subscription .. for netflix and hulu. But I do not have to pay to access the netflix app.

The last time I tried to use my xbox for netflix I needed to have a membership just to access the app.

Yeah, that's always been kind of a stupid MS decision but I have about 4 other things that have the Netflix app on them plugged into the tv so it's irrelevant in my case. Don't think I've ever even used the XBox Netflix app anyway.

We just ordered an XBox One, mainly due to availability versus no PS4s to be had anywhere (except paying insane reseller prices of $700+ for what normally costs $400). We did not have the PS3 or the XBox 360, so we really had no loyalty to either platform. We have a Wii which I now realize is 7 years old!

The XBox One requires a membership to their online service for $60/year, to access a lot of their features. I believe with the PS4, Sony charges $50/year for similar access. I read reviews on CNET and in Game Informer magazine (published by Gamestop) of both the PS4 and XBox One. The scores came out similar, and they acknowledge that each platform is likely to have its loyal following. In other words, the PS4 will likely be supported by existing PS3 fans, and XBox One by current XBox 360 fans.

I considered getting an older platform like a PS3, but then I figured, why go with older technology when the software companies are pretty much going to concentrate on the XBox One and PS4 going forward.

It sounds like both of the newer platforms were hurried to market without all of their planned features. So, there should be updated content and features going forward for both.

I didn't research PS4 games in depth, but the XBox One has yet to release some titles. Some sellers like Gamestop are allowing preorders. We wound up getting FIFA 14 soccer for our son and the Just Dance game for our daughter, as both are available now.

As another post here suggests, see what your kids' friends are using. They will enjoy being able to share games, play together online, or just brag about each others' high scores image.

Happy shopping. And to keep it card related, I see my order from checkoutmycards.com just shipped image.

Wondering what system the OP wound up getting?

We are loving the Xbox One! Great graphics and gameplay, and so cool how much you can do with one unit in terms of playing Blu Ray discs, controlling the TV, etc.
