What, if any, non-sport cards do you collect?

I'm only asking because I'd like to see what all is out there. I'm interested in doing a non-sport set or just open a box of cool non-sport cards.

I've got a couple of 19th Century Sets, Duke World Leaders and the Governers sets. A T118 Explorers set, incredible artwork, much like T218, and a few '50's movie and TV stars sets. Plus a few dozen unopened packs from '60's TV shows like Flying Nun, Batman, McHales Navy, etc. Makes for a nice display.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • Space 1999 raw. Thinking about doing Star Wars graded.

Age can be a huge factor here. I was 9 when garbage pail kids came out and they were a big deal on the playground for a while. So for me those packs are loaded with nostalgia. For any other age group, I can only assume they are some of the worst cards on the market. The late 70s early 80s movies appeal to me as do the early 80s video game sets. If you were too old or too young for the 8 bit arcade games, I have no idea why you would like those.

For some more universal sets, Look n See is a 50s set that is fun if you like history. There are also some political sets through the years including general presidents sets. One era that interests me is the atomic age. The mars attacks heritage is a great reprint that you can rip and put together easily. The original is out there if you have deep pockets. There are a couple of other fantasy space sets from that era. The man on the moon box boasts that it has real photos of men on the moon.

What do you like? What pop references are most likely to spark something for you? Or are you looking for something older than you are?

  • I collect Garbage Kids also. They were my gateway drug image. I remember driving all over Phoenix with my Pops when that first series came out. We must have hit 10 different 7=11 looking for them and came up empty each time. So my Dad said "How about Baseball Cards?". Off to a card shop and awayyyyy we go!!!!! It's a small part of my collection now.....

I really enjoy the Graded Packs. I have a run from Series 1 to about 10 I believe. I was lucky enough to get this one graded:

I just took some GPK items to Michaels to get framed on Black Friday. Man is it expensive to get custom framing! I am just now getting to get stuff on the walls in my house, it's gonna cost me a crap ton in the end.

If money was no object the 1952 Topps Look N See set would be at the top of my list of cards to start collecting. Such great photos and love the variety of individuals in it.
  • It depends on what genre interests you. For modern releases....If you grew up on Garbage Pail Kids, there is a Topps Chrome version of that set available. If you're into science fiction, there is always a Star Wars or Star Trek set out there. Interesting sets available from the Viceroy Card Co. are sets called "Insectae" and "The Deep". The boxes only contain handful of cards but one is a hand drawn sketch card of Insects and Ocean life. If you have kids ,you can't go wrong with any gaming set.

I have almost two complete sets of 1888 Allen & Ginters Birds of America, one is almost fully graded by SGC. Also have about two thirds of the 62 Topps Civil War set in high grade. A few more odds and ends, i have really lost interest in them if anyone is interested.

The original Star Wars for me. I have a PSA graded 1977 Star Wars Wonder Bread set and I'm working on a PSA graded 1977 Star Wars Series 1 Sticker set right now. I also have the Series 2 Sticker set PSA graded. I also have PSA graded unopened packs from each series, and I have at least on set raw of each series and may try graded sets of each some day.

I've also thought about starting on a graded 1978 Battlestar Galactica set. Would really like to do one self submitted, but unopened BSG actually seems hard to find. I can't recall the last time BBCE had a box for sale.
Currently working on: Kurt Warner PSA 9 or 10

Lmk what you are looking for brotha!
  • Seriously, are there enough unopened star wars series one out there to even start a PSA set?
    Thx

I collect lots of non sports but most of my collection consists of movie star cards from the 1930's
  • I collect pre world war tobacco cards from the UK. There is a ton of supply and was collected by adults so a lot of it is in great condition.

I like the historical stuff since I am a history buff

    I was pretty heavy into...

    1933 Goudey Indian Gum
    1957 Topps Hit Stars

    Both great sets.

I have some raw T118 Explorers that I like, just purchased a set of T38 Aviators as well.

I have an odd attraction to the N1 Editors Set. I only have one card but find the idea of a set devoted to newspaper editors fascinating - has a card of Joseph Pulitzer in the series.

I also have a few Amelia Earhart cards from different sets, I've taken to submitting a card of her's with big submissions for good luck.

For nostalgia sake I also have a collection of Welcome Back Kotter cards.

I'm kind of all over the map with nonsport. I have an early-20th century movie stars set, dozens and dozens of Charlie Chaplin cards from all over the world from the 1920s and 1930s, whatever Orson Welles stuff I could find from the 1940s and 1950s, started the 1965 Topps Battle set a few months ago, some random unopened packs from the 1970s, some unopened boxes from the 1970s and 1980s, and some oddball stuff for some difficult 1980s sets. I'm getting a new scanner delivered on Monday and when I do I'll start scanning a whole bunch of stuff and post some pics.

I'm a bit of a movie buff so much of what I collect is movie related but I've picked up some TV show stuff as well. Couldn't resist picking up a few boxes of 1984 Topps He-Man Masters of the Universe because I played with those when I was a kid. Wish they had made a set for Mask (the cartoon, not the movie). Those were great when I was a kid. What was it? I believe an IROC or something, that the doors folded up and became wings for the car to fly? Those were the days. They never made a decent set for G.I. Joe or Transformers either, which is a shame. No matter what you're into, there's a nonsport set that covers it.

Same here. The N1 set was a regular ebay search for me back in the day. I loved the idea of the set but just never got around to pulling the trigger on one.

Yes! It's actually a spinnerbait tackle box, made by a company called Plano, but it holds wax packs perfectly.

That's great, thanks. I need to pick up a few of those. How many packs can you fit in one?

It depends on the thickness. With the wacky pack unopened I use it for, which are fairly thin, I can fit about 32-36 in a box. With 70s sports card packs I would guess more like 15-20?

    Just ordered 4, thanks again.

    Hey Chris

I have some nonsport sets - that I collected for no reason other than they looked nice - motion picture stars.

    But something I'm passionate about?

Lobby Cards from Sci-fi/Horror movies of the 50s.

American lobby cards come in a set of 8 with a "Title" card - and are 11X14"

    The flagships of my collection:

The Forbidden Planet 1956, The Thing 1951, War of the Worlds 1953 and This Island Earth 1955

I have some old IHRA cards, 60's Beatle Cards and a few car sets like Corvette and Mustang issues. I like the WWII sets but they are too pricey to commit to. I also have several boxes of Desert Storm cards and some rock and roll cards that have the key cards missing (really?) That's all folks!
    CURRENT PROJECTS IN WORK:
To be honest, no direction, but...
    1966-69 Topps EX+
1975 minis NrMt Kelloggs PSA 9
    All Topps Heritage-Master Sets

I'll dabble into almost any vintage nonsports, but I'm seriously into some of the Presidents sets (ranging from U.S. Caramel to Golden Press), '40s and '50s airplane sets, war sets (ranging from Horrors of War to Parkhurst Missiles and Satellites to Power for Peace), Bowman NBC TV & Radio Stars, T118, Look n See, Topps Scoops, Gum Adventure, Topps Magic Photos, W512 and W513, and picking up cheap kid-appropriate unopened stuff to introduce my nephew to card collecting in a few years.
