PSA Vs PCGS numbers ?

I've hear before on here that PSA is a small pecentage of Collecotrs universe compared to the whole company and that the coin market is there big business . I think the number said was something like 5% compared to the coin market. Is this true? Just by going on the number on ebay when I put in the search of PCGS and PSA I saw a big difference in numbers for Sold items and they where PCGS(coins) 114,000 & PSA(cards) 294,000 . And for curent listed buy it now and auctions I got listed numbers of PCGS 89,000 & PSA 644,000 . I am both a coin and card guy and just thought Id look up whats going on in the ebay world with PCGS and PSA and was shocked to see the difference in listings. So was the rumor that I heard that PSA is only a small fraction of CLCT true or is the card market biger, smaller or equal to the coin world? What do these ebay numbers mean for each hobby? Any insight on this would be great.

Sold , listed

PSA 294,000 644,000
PCGS 114,000 89,000

  • I collect both and I believe you are correct - the coin market is much bigger than the card market. I don't think it means anything in particular other than that coin collecting is more established as a collectible. Coins have been made for three thousand years or so while cards have been around for 150. I would think that cards may catch up a little as grading catches on more with collectors. Grading is well established with coin collectors.
  • Coins are huge all money is. There obvious reasons why coins are much more attractive to collectors and investors.

PCGS has graded over 27M coins worth over $27Billion dollars
PSA has graded over 20M coins worth just over $1Billion dollars

Revenue wise every quarter PCGS gets about 65%+ of revenue from coins, 25% from PSA, 10% from other (internet ads, dealer networks, etc)

PSA been growing faster than coins in the past couple of years and has been having steadier growth. Coins are busy Jan-June. Cards have been busy year round.
