Nelson Mandela had a numismatic effect in the United States.

The anti-Apartheid movement which he was part of got the US government to ban
the importation of Krugerrands in 1985.

The ban was lifted in 1991.

Some very nice coins but none with Nelson Mandela's portrait? Has South Africa not minted a coin with his image yet? I imagine it will be on a lot of coins soon.

Seeing that smile reminded me of the recent interview I saw where Richard Branson talked about Mandela and how it was usually expensive to meet with him since he could not turn down Mandela's requests for donations to charity whenever he saw that smile.

Branson is one of the few magnates who wins me over every time. Who knows, the guy might be a douche in reality, but I've never seen him do anything or say anything that rubbed me the wrong way in the least. His donation portfolio is truly impressive. Talk about giving back and paying it forward.
