Thoughts on this 1968 Nolan Ryan.

Hi everyone.

I am fairly new to this forum .. but this would be my biggest purchase yet.

Any thoughts on this card?

It looks pretty good to me .. better than some of the other ones I have seen.

Its just a big purchase and I am not in front of it.

Centering to me looks good. Better than others.
Corners are look good to me to.
    Back looks good.

    Did I miss anything?

Basically I was just looking for a 2nd pair of eyes on this one and make sure I dont miss a red flag.

I have an itch to buy one .. I have let a few already slip by me.
Dont get me wrong as much as I want one I am not in a huge rush.

As an anal nut, this card looks like a nice 8 to me. One corner (the one near the Mets circle) appears to be noticeably touched. The cut seems nice, the only VERY minor issue being a slight tapering on the long bottom edge. Overall, a very nice 8.

    Centering is off side/side.
Thus is not a top end card and I would not pay top $ for it. IMHO

It is nice and straight 8 but you can find better for this $ IMHO

If the centering was perfect, it would likely be an 8.5. Wouldn't you say an 8 with perfect centering is likely to have more corner wear? Perhaps you regard that as more desirable, but not everyone does.

I think the card is a very nice example. The centering is great in my opinion. If this is a card that appeals to you then do it.

I was also checking two out on Milehigh ..

This is a very nice 8.5

And this is a BVG 9 ... but I think the 8.5 looks better than this one. It could just be the picture.

Nice Ryan, most of the backs are off center, this one stands above most in that regard.

Don't try bringing logic into the grading process, it doesn't work that way. If you read these threads, you have seen the examples of both over and under graded cards.

First of all it is an attractive card, front centering is a bit off, back has a slight tilt (I don't usually care about the back, but this IS a $1700.00 purchase). Bottom corners are hard to see clearly, the scan doesn't "zoom" in well enough for me to get a good enough look at any of the corners.

I would pass on this card for the reason stated "not a high end 8 for a high end price" wait for one that comes up in an auction and see if it goes cheaper.

Buy it Now's are usually priced too high when they first pop up (in my opinion) to see if there are any people that are willing to pay more than an item is worth.

You say you are not in a huge rush, that is good. Wait for a better one is my advice.

Good luck and welcome to the boards!

Personally, I like the eBay 8 the best. The backs of the other two would drive me crazy more than the one touched corner (in addition to the print spots on the front of the 8.5).

Tapering on the bottom edge reminds me of an 8 I have that I use for an avatar. Card looks pretty solid. Nice 8. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'd definitely pass on that BVG card.

The PSA 8 looks ok, but I think you can find a better one.

The PSA 8.5 is nice but you can probably find a PSA 8 in an older holder that will be just as nice for a lower price.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

I think I will wait and see what comes around.

I have also been looking at SGC cards in hopes of a crossover but based on another thread that is also iffy since I want at least a PSA 8.

This one looks nice .. and i requested a picture of the back. Plus its hard to tell because of the black case.

    SGC 7.5

There's a back scan already, just scroll down in the listing. Looks similar to the PSA8 w/1 touched corner, but with a slight tilt and the back's not as centered.

Looks to me like a $1300 card lately, at best. Probably high 1200's. For the above reasons given.

It looks like a nice 8 to me. Print looks better than most but beware of photoshop enhancement (not alteration but boosting color settings). I don't know that I'd pay $1600 for it. As others have stated, send Bruce an email and see if he is willing to move on the price. There should be some room in it based on historical sales data.
