Depends on severity and how noticeable it is. It is not as bad as a wrinkle which is an automatic 5 in my experience. I've seen 8s and even some 9s with small bubbles.

  • only noticeable with magnifier really. I never saw it till I looked close with magnifier glass .

but I got two answers hmmm
  • I've gotten 8s on cards with one small bubble.

I have 8s with small bubbles on them. In fact, I have a 1972 Clemente I pulled from a pack that has a pretty significant bubble on it. It still received an 8, probably because the card is otherwise mint to gem. My 1971 Blyleven RC didn't bump to 8.5 because of a surface bubble. Though Grote mentioned seeing 9s with bubbles, I wouldn't expect anything higher than an 8.

I once had a 7 on a 59 Robin Roberts with a large dark wax stain on the back,go figure.I bought it on ebay.Personally I would never have submitted a card like that.

I've submitted 2 cards that I knew to have a bubble. 1989 UD Griffey and 1985 Topps McGwire. They both seemed fairly hidden in the coloring, and received PSA 9's.

I've got a PSA 10 with a bubble. Whether it scans well enough to see I dunno, but I could give it a shot if anyone wants to see it.
  • What do you call a bubble? Is it an actual separation of the top layer from the middle or is it a printing dot? Just curious.

It looks like a clogged pore where there is actual bubble of air in the paper caused by some sort of drying process or humidity

^^^^^^ That's what I call it. There's a difference between a print dot and bubble
