What 80's wax boxes had wrapping over the box?

For the most part, the wax boxes that I see don't have any wrapping over them but occasionally I'll see an 80's wax box (any sport) that is wrapped in a cello wrapping. What years and/or sports boxes were wrapped (if any)?

Thanks!

That being said, I'd defer to the group.
<< <i>IIRC, I had an 87 Topps BB case that had boxes wrapped in cellophane. The few boxes I have left from the case don't have it anymore, but if I recall it was loose and a little brittle. I wouldn't stake my life on it, but I do vaguely recall a wrap on them that I removed when it ripped.

I think I have a few loose boxes of 87 topps that are wrapped in cellophane as well. I don't remember where I got them from but bought that was weird. If i get a chance I will try to post a picture of them.

<< <i>There are 1986, 1987, and 1988 Topps Baseball wax boxes with a cellophane wrap (though not a shrinkwrap) that were distributed at retail stores or wholesale clubs. I think Topps needed to add the wrap to satisfy the retailers desire to do box-only sales. The wax case also has a different case code to differentiate between the regular version and the wrapped one. >>
Reed,
Do you know if these are more or less desirable than the regular boxes? If the boxes/cases are wrapped, do they tend to sell for more? Are they that much more rare than regular issue? Thanks.
<< <i>Didn't 89 UD come shrinkwrapped from the factory? I believe the 1989 Topps Michigan Test boxes were factory wrapped as well. >>
I thought this was the case as well with the 89 UD factory sets. I bought several over the years that did have wrapping.

I'd say they are quite desirable. When I was responsible for pricing items for sale at my previous employer, I'd price the wrapped boxes for double, and they would sell immediately. I'd usually only find them a box or two at a time. As far as the scarcity of the wrapped boxes, I'd say it's easily a few hundred times harder to find than the unwrapped boxes. You just don't see them very often, and the cellophane tends to be very brittle, so the survival rate of these boxes must be quite low.
IIRC, the case code has an added letter "J" - a regular 1987 Topps Baseball Wax Case code is #362-87, while the cellophane wrapped version is #362-87J.

Thanks for your response. I'll have to dig through my boxes and try to get a picture up on here in a day or so.
Thanks again!!

When my brother and I did shows back in the day, we were able to command a premium for them. I do remember them being in the 1988 multi-pacs, but do not know about 1986.
